Oxblood Lily, Schoolhouse Lily (Rhodophiala bifida)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I was fortunate enough to find schoolhouse lily bulbs at my favorite nursery 2 days ago ($2.49 each!). I was hoping to plant them today, but decided I had better check with someone in my zone before I did. Do they grow in partial shade (morning sun/afternoon filtered shade)? Do they survive in full sun in 8b? I am so glad you posted this photo. Any help will be appreciated.

I have mine planted on the edge of a tree line where they get sun from midday to late afternoon. I'm not sure where they were planted in the person's yard that I got them from (and I can't remember who!!), but I do remember she told me that they prefer to be planted deep. I just planted them back as deep as the leaves were bleached, about 6-7 inches deep. I was surprised that they bloomed this fall, since I only planted them this spring, but it was only a couple of bulbs that did so. I expect that they'll do better next fall.

Stacy, thanks for the information. BTW, your photo is nice. Wow, that is deep. The directions say 4 inches, but I'm taking your advice. I planted licoris in the spring last year. I was so disappointed that they did not bloom, but I figured that I had planted them too late in the year. The leaves are up so I will just have to wait until next fall when they can complete a full cycle of growth.

Lycoris are kind of funny...I had both some L. aurea and L. squamigeria (sp?) I got in trades, and only one of the yellow bloomed and NONE of the pink. None of my red bloomed this year either. I just moved here a year ago and had to transplant them all. I was told they don't like being disturbed and may skip a blooming season when transplanted.

I just planted the Rhodophiala bifida bulbs as a heavy mist rolled in. I wanted to get them in the ground in case in rains which will help them shoot up. They are already sprouting. I too have read that Lycoris don't like to be moved . We will just have to keep our fingers crossed and that hope they bloom next year. It will be well worth the wait. Thanks again for the info.
