Tricyrtis sinonome beginning to bloom

The flower is so tiny and pretty! I had one a few years ago that didn't survive the winter. How do you prepare yours for winter? I want to get another some day, but don't want to lose it again. Thanks.

Actually I didn't do a thing to prepare them for winter. I have had 2 plants since June of 2002 and they just keep getting better and better. Both plants are in my hosta woodland garden which is very protected. One plant is in front of a large tree root/stump and the other next to a Faerie Chair, on slight slopes (good drainage). I have them mulched and then allow the fallen leaves to cover them for the winter. I keep them watered during the hot summer. That's about it.

From what you say, the problem for me is likely that the plant wasn't protected - it was on the north side of the house, where its extremely windy, so gets very dried out all the time; its very hard to keep a good moisture level in the soil. Maybe I'll plant one in my neighbour's garden where they have the right conditions....lol. At least I could see it that way! Thanks.

That is a beautiful picture of your toad lily. I planted a few this fall in my new shade garden I sure hope they look like that next year. Do you collect the seed or just let it fall to the ground? I have heard it is hard to start from seed.

I have never collected seed from these plants. I took a quick look at them the other day since they just recently finished blooming and I saw nothing at all on the stems........no seedpod or anything. So I don't know what that's all about. I have only had Toad Lilies for 2 years now. Maybe tomorrow I'll go out and inspect them a little closer. I don't know if they didn't form seedpods or if wildlife ate them or if they fell to the ground. If I find anything I'll let you know.

I think these little lilies are the most fascinating flower I have seen in a long time. I came across another one that I really like too and that is the checkered lily. I have those and since I have seen these I will have to see if I can find some.

I have finally been able to grow Toad Lilies and am always on the lookout for more. I moved this year and the garden beds here, while lovely and well cared for, had none. So I fixed that! So far I've planted 5 of them, and will add a few more each year. I agree, they are very fascinating. So little and so exquisite in their detail.

well I won't be able to get any this year as it is to late in the season but sure am going to find some before spring. I am glad your finally able to grow them.I know it is frustrating when you try something any then it just doesn't happen.
