Miss Anna is covered in buds, but all previous blooms have fallen off. I also had a small brug bloom with 2 pale pink blooms earlier this week, but the nametag is lost. Variegata has 2 blooms about to open as well. The wind has really turn up a lot of the leaves, but the flowers are sure purty. lol

Sue, I never seem to get outside after dark, so I haven't smelled any fragrance at all from any of these brugs. I keep seeing everyone posting about the awesome frangrance, but I've yet to smell the slightest wafting of aroma from a single one. lol

Sylvia, you don't know what you are missing. Generally they will begin to smell good about an hour or two before dark during the heat of the summer. I don't know about now since mine are all put to bed for the winter. Your pictures are great. Hope you get a chance to take a big whiff.

Me too.

Hey Minigrannie! Beautiful brug, first of all (the "old faithful" picture). I have a few questions if you don't mind. I know we are in different zones even though we are in the same state, but still, I will have several brug cuttings to plant in the spring and want to do some research first. So, did that one you have grow from seed or cuttings? If cuttings, was it below the "y"? I just ask b/c supposedly that makes them grow more tree shape, like yours, and I want at least one of mine to grow like that if possible. Can you prune a shrub growing brug to where it grows like a tree? Do you cut it down in the winter or just leave it? Do you mulch? I guess just the basic background and care you give that big guy is what I'm curious about. Sorry for all the questions!!! :)

Sylvia, I'm so glad you finally got some pretty blooms! I just got Island Girl and can't wait till next year. Please, please go sniff it for us, lol!

I'm so glad too. I thought I was going to end the brug season with only my "Old Faithful" blooming.

TexasGarden, I purchased Old Faithful at a local nursery 3 years ago, and it was supposed to be pink, so I don't know for sure what it is. It was growing in a gallon pot, so don't know if it was grown from seed or a cutting. I would imagine it was grown from a cutting. It always starts out the year from the ground and is more bushy, but late in the summer it starts losing the bottom leaves and turns into this canopy. I don't do anything to it, so I'm not much help. Last winter was so mild that it only froze part way back, so got off to a fast start in the spring. We used to live in Ft. Worth, so I know the winters do get quite a bit colder more often than here in San Antonio. I would think if you mulched yours though, it would come back ok.

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just stuck my head outside and the smell was delicious. I could smell Island Girl as soon as I opened the door onto the patio. She is planted right off the patio. That's weird that they only smell at night. I thought I just had brugs that had no smell. Yippee! I can see how a yard full of them would be overpowering.

Sylvia -- your pictures and your blooms are wonderful! Thank you for sharing them with us!!! And, I'm so glad you finally got to smell them!

Your new camera does a great job!!!!!

Thanks Mini- just one follow up question... do you cut it back to the ground yourself or do you let it die back on it's own? If you just let it do it on it's own, do you have to clean it up in the spring? I mean, do you have to cut off dead growth or is it just gone on it's own? Sorry if those are dumb questions!

TexasGarden, I wait until Spring to see how far down it has frozen and then cut it back. It's really not that much trouble. Usually I have to cut it back to the ground and it comes back from the roots, but last Winter was so mild here in San Antonio that I only had to cut it about halfway back. The bottom half stayed green and leafed out from there. I have another one just like it that I bought last Summer at a different local nursery. It also was supposed to be pink. Either the growers here are colorblind, or they aren't very careful with their cuttings. LOL

Great! Thanks for the info. I lean towards not cutting back until the spring (for any plant) b/c I really feel that it helps protect them to have the foliage. But the unkept look over the winter sometimes gets the better of me and I go crazy with the weed whacker. Ha! :) But since brugs rot pretty easily, I thought it would probably be best to not cut it back in the fall and leave open "wounds" for water and snow to get in. I have about 15 cuttings going right now so I hope to have enough to experiment with. That is strange that you got TWO mislabled plants! They are all gorgeous though. Thanks again for the info!
