Hi I have two varieties of Kong Coleus. One of which you already have (Mosiac) and the other is Red. Which are you three? I'm interested in getting all of them eventually. They root super fast.

Hi Cyberageous! Your coleus is beautiful!
Do you let them flower intentionally? The reason I ask is that if you keep the flower heads pinched back, the foliage will be fuller and more compact than if you let it flower. But, you may know that and prefer to have the flowers!

They are beautiful Carol. Where did you purchase them from?

Everglades, FL(Zone 10a)

Usually I pinch off the flowers but I wanted to enjoy these first. I bought them last week at Home Depot.

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

Yep. My home depot had them at $14.99 so I could only afford two of them. LOL.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Good grief. I can't believe Home Depot is selling those for $14.99.

The plugs that we sell of those, to commercial growers are 30 to 50 cents depending on the tray size. There are I believe 5 varieties out right now. Red, Rose, Mosiac, Green, and Scarlet.

Chris:

Do you plan to sell these to your retail customers? If so, I'm already in line! :-)

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

Hey Chris,

They were selling them in huge 3 gallon pots but it was only one plant in each pot. I thought that it was way expensive considering this plant roots so easily. I got the mosiac and the red. I figured I could root cuttings of these and trade rooted plants for the ones I couldn't afford. :-)

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi Delecie,

BT won't be selling these. We like to stick with bulbs and rhizomes that store and ship easily.

That surprised me on the price too. Not only do they root easily, but they can finish them out in a 3 gallon in no time. I'd expect that price to come down substantially as more growers offer it. I'm curious to know who's making all the money on these. The grower or the retailer.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

I just pulled some cultural info on these, and from transplant (from a plug) to a finished 3 gallon is about 8-10 weeks, which is a very quick crop for 3 gallon production.

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

Yep. That sounds about right on the growing out. I took 3 lower braches off of mine and stuck each one in a gallon pot. I now have 8 (4 of each) identical plants and I only bought two plants. I just love coleus.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

To start a new a new coleus, just grab a branch and plant it? I have a nice-sized "Superfine rainbow color pride" coleus I would love to have more of.

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

That's all it take. You can even root a coleus leaf. Make sure to use some good potting soil like Miracle Grow and don't let the soil dry out. Keep the pot in shade. You'll know it has rooted when you see new leaf growth. If you don't have a mister to root by, then you should either remove all leaves or cover the pot with a plastic bag to prevent stem wilting.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Living in zone 8b, I've moved my two coleus plants indoors so I'll be growing all starts indoors. What type of soil mixture should I use for a new start? I have "whitney farms" potting soil, my favorite, a huge bag of perilite, cactus soil mix, and organic compost. I've never tried to grow a start before. How moist should I keep the soil mixture. The only "misters" I have are the spray bottles. How often should I mist the new start? How long does it take for new leaf growth?

This is the plant I want to take cuttings from.

Dick, that's a gorgeous bed you have there!

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

thank you very much MCK

emily i don't think you can drown Coleus
break off a branch, strip most of the big leaves leaving the little ones on the tip
& stick in a container of water, change water at least once a week
& watch the roots grow before your eyes
then into any ol good potting soil & keep moist
feed when growing once a month
i have a large leaf in water growing roots from the end of the stem
see the pict i just now took

Emily,

I live is zone 8A slightly colder than you. I have "ONE" coleus mosaic in the ground but all the others are in gallon pots. I plant to take as many cuttings as I can off of the one in the ground right before it freezes. I usually don't get worried about winter until right about now. Last night we had our first cold front, he he he it was 45. Our first freeze isn't due until right around January.

Your soil mix sounds perfect for rooting coleus. I just mist them for about one week off and on when I remember to turn the mister on. I leave the mister on for about three hours during the day, but never at night, unless I completely forget to turn them off. This happens more than I care to admit. I have many plants rooting at the same time and one mister can cover an area of about 5 sq ft easy. Your little spray bottle should be good to use with the cuttings you plan to take. After a week the pot will be full of roots. But don't move the cutting as the roots are very fine hairy roots that can break easily. Wait for about two weeks if you plan to repot.

Dick,

You have a wonderful bed there. Can I get you come do that to mine? LOL. I just stick stuff everywhere so in September I'm rushing to move everything around so it flows better.

I have never been good at rooting anything in water. I can't keep up with the water changing...eventually I forget to do it and then I lose everything. So I root in soil...there's no forgetting that way and once I have roots I won't lose them if I forget to water that week.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Dick! Great looking coleus. I always seem to rot them when I try to winter them over in the house. They do great for awhile then, they go bye bye!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Dick, that is a beautiful bed! You should post your pics in the Shade Garden forum.

Your bed is gorgeous. I want one like it in my yard. :-)

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

How often should I water my Coleus plants? I moved them indoors in a north-facing window about a month ago due to the night temperatures dropping into the 40's. Do these plants like to be misted? If so, how often? Should I fertilize them? One problem I've been having is losing leaves. Maybe this is normal, but it seems they both drop about 3 leaves each week.

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

well now something is wrong
i posted a reply last nite & now i don't see it ???
maybe i forgot to hit the send button :-) ???
FJ... i think :-) getting harder all the time, that i said
i also just plop them into pots
but decided to play around with the water because of all the comments about
water being so much trouble, & the leaf experiment is going bonkers :-)
i leave them outside either on the back porch or in the potting shed
Kell i wonder if that may be your problem ?
too warm in the house ? try the back porch or your seedling room
Emily these plants will take all the water you give them & more
the bed i have out in the front yard on the north side gets watered every day
during the summer i even had the sprinklers come on twice a day
they just kept on soaking it all up & growing like weeds :-)
oh Cyberageous i also apologized to you for the hijacking
thank you all for the nice comments but Coleus just does great in So. Calif
i put about 6 bags of MG soil in the bed then bought a doz small plants & they just grew :-)
oh & i gave them water every day & still do
i think it is getting about time to start pruning them down to size
& start a bunch of small starts

Dick
