Just a quick question on planting Brug & Datura seeds. Is now the time for my zone?
I started in reading threads and thought I would go blind there are so many of them. I found a thread dated the end of last year "talking about their Brug seedlings" but most of the people posting were from FL, so I thought I better ask the question.
To nick or not nick .... I'm going to try both!!
"jody" sent me some Brug cuttings and they are doing Great!!
I love all the pictures on the Forum.
Thanks so much, Judy
PS If anyone has cuttings they want to trade for house plants, I would appreciate you letting me know.
When to plant Brug & Datura Seeds?
Many people start them inside at a bright windowsill around the first of the year no matter what zone you live in. You can start them anytime before spring for planting in the spring.
I would not nick; I would either peel off the corky outer covering of the brug seed or soak them for 24 hours in water which starts out hand hot. The datura seed just needs to be soaked in water which starts out hand hot for 24 hours before sowing.
You are in for a treat Judy! I actually started some today. I am a not so patient person, and want blooms ASAP, lol so I kinda start them whenever the mood hits.
Congrats on the cuttings, Judy. Before you know it, they will be big blooming bushes or trees. You will be astonished, when you realise, how fast they can grow.
I don' t usually nick seeds, but sow in a potting/ sowing mix with seedcoat and all. In Denmark (zone 7) it work great to sow around Christmass as the daylenght is in increase. I cross my fingers that late October is also good for sowing out as I got some cooking as well.

Last summer a friend kept asking if I wanted a brug and I kept telling her NO, finally when I wasn't looking she put one in my van.... it bloomed, I was hooked!!! She also forced a single white Datura upon me and I feel the same about them. Just goes to show, sometime we should listen to our friends!!

I would say you're only limited by where you'll keep them until spring. I have some 2 months old that have been moved up to 1 gal pots and moved to the gh. I have others soaking upstairs as I speek. They will germinate and grow in my inside "grow room" until they're big enough to go outside. I find that once they're old enough they do better outside (gh) than inside. Guess it's a humidity thing. This was Feb '04.
Very good point!!! I'll have to wait and see how much room I can make for them after I move all my plants in for the winter. That's some substantial growth in 2 months!!! What size pot do you move them up to by mid summer?
Clare_CA, Tonny & LHughes - thanks so much for your responses. If later you think of any "tips" please pass them along to me.
Shelly221 - you sound like me!!!

We are all blessed to have today, but not guaranteed to have tomorrow.
I'm new to the Forum and have followed with enthusiasm all the posts on brugs. I had never heard about them until I saw some this year growing in people's yards and could not identify them. It was through the Forum that I figured out what I was admiring.
I have searched for cuttings on eBay, but I am not sure who I can trust to send quality cuttings. I would love to have cuttings of a few different brugs - but I have nothing to trade until the clivia seeds mature. Does anyone out there have cuttings to give for a SESE? I will treat them well and nurture them.

Ok, once you get the Brugs rooted and planted in pots in the house (not greenhouse) this time of year, what do you feed them? I understand they are very heavy feeders. But it seems to me to make sense to give them something but not enough to make them bloom in the house???? Please some help.

I like to get mine started anytime from late Oct. on. The soon planted, the better the chance of having bloom next summer and not having to hold them over another year to maybe find out it wasn't worth the time spent on it. I have several that I started in February of this year that didn't make it to Y and I'm holding them over.
In that case, I'm right on time!! Thanks
starshine, I'll have cuttings in a couple of weeks I can send you for postage. Just let me know..
