My 2004/2005 stick garden is underway!

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Hi, all -

Here is a pic of all my cuttings - most of which I have received from fellow DGers within the last week or two (thanks again, Donna B, Diana G, and Betty S. ). What do ya think - have I got enough?? Actually, there are a few more trades I have to complete so there WILL be more..LOL. Hey Betty - those few in the back right of the picture are the Isabellas you sent me - already rooted in water and I potted them up today!). Everyone I have traded with has been so generous so as you can see - I'm gonna be busy rooting, and potting these up as they grow over winter. Next year my yard should be a paradise! My husband thinks I have flipped, but smiles when he sees me squeal with excitement when a new package of cuttings arrives!

Margie - the seeds you sent me are just to the left of what you see in this picture in rockwool on a heat mat - 6 days and counting but no germination yet -- but I'll be patient.

Diane, that photo is just too cute, I love it!!!!!!

Will you have a place to plant all of these? If you do I envey you. They all really look like they are doing great. You must be doing something just right.

Hi, Linda - well I won't have any trouble finding a spot outside for them next Spring - as I have a very large yard and I grow them in Pots (about 5 gallon nursery pots). But my dilema will be finding enough windowsill space to keep this many starter pots going until Spring. Last winter I only had two brug cuttings (Jean Pasko and Dr. Seuss) which I started in water like these on November 1, 2003. By February they were in 6-8 inch pots and by mid may in 2-gallon containers outside. I'm gonna have to think of something between now and the middle of winter if all these cuttings survive and grow. LOL

Looks like you will have a very nice brug collection for spring.

Diane those are great, and I just love those 'fancy' containers, tha main thing is they all look very healthy.

Looking great Diane !! My greenhouse will be looking like that in a few weeks.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Wow! Its looking great! Im sure they will reward you next year. How exciting!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Looks wonderful, Diane! I'm going to have a very similar scene in the next couple of days, I think...

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Diane, looks like lots of bloom for you next year. My small 10 x 14 greenhouse is jammed with 5 large pots of blooming brugs, and all my other 'can't-do-without' plants. I have another insulated but not unless absolutely necessary heated room at other end of garage. It has my bonsai and 3 or 4 other potted brugs, so I don't have much room left for plants. Yours look very good, and also good luck finding places for them after they beging to grow. Donna

I absolutely love the picture. Now the question is, did you "stage" all those different containers or is that really what you are rooting them in???

Regardless it's a wonderful picture and shows just how addicted we are. I wonder what "outsiders" would think.

In the summer, I tried to explain to a non-gardening friend, before she came to visit, that there were jars and pots of twigs everywhere because I was rooting for a swap met, obviously from the look on her face I didn't do a good job of preparing her. I'm sure at the next luncheon with our friends in the "big city" she told me all I had taken leave of my senses. lol lol lol

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Diane....I just checked my records...brug seeds that I planted in RW on 10/10 started to come up on the 29th. So you have a bit to go yet, I would say....I soaked my seeds for 24-48 hrs. first too. And I should say, only 3 of the total have come up so far...
Good luck, and you have given me the idea to use cans too, I have used up all of my glass jars!

i have reservations using cans cuz in the long ran they tend to rust. i do not know if the rust will have effect on the rooting of the brugs. i need input from someone who has used the can before.

i have better luck using bottles - they are clean and easy to see the progress of cuttings being rooted. jmo

I use the clear plasic cups, then I can see what the roots are doing. pretty cheap at the Dollar store

HI, ALL -

JUDYCOOKSEY - lol -- no that photo isn't staged - that is exactly how I am rooting them - some jars, some cans, some glass coke bottles. I usually use all jars, but I ran out with so many cuttings! LOL The cans have been thoroughly cleaned with a bleach solution and I won't keep them around long enough to rust - once the cuttings have rooted - I throw them out. The cuttings root just as quickly in the cans as the jars and I haven't detected any problems with them so far. It does look pretty funny though! As a matter of fact, I rooted those great big fat Isabella cuttings Betty sent me in cans because the cuttings were so fat they didnt' fit in my small jars...and after a week the roots coming out of the stalks were 2-3 inches long!

Margie - okay I will try to be patient with the seeds -- I didn't soak them first so it may take longer yet. As I mentioned to you the seeds I tried in the florist foam cubes didn't sprout either - but it maybe I gave up on them two early also as I tossed them after 2 weeks when I didn't see anything. I just HAVE to learn to be more patient! :-)

You sure are going to have a nice variety of color in your yard next year. The cuttings look great and your seeds will soon be popping their little heads.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Diane -- some brugs can take many weeks, even months to germinate and sprout. You might want to check around here, but I don't believe many if any use a heat mat... I use RW in a domed container and keep the dome within an inch or two of a fluorescent grow light. Just a thought...

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

when I planted my seeds I soaked them overnight then nicked them very lightly, didn't take long to start sprouting

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

How exciting, Diane. It must be fun watching beautiful flowers grow from these little sticks. The wonders of nature!

your right KRNYSGIRL, and as you can see through the window it is a very rainy day here

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Diane, I have a similar arrangement. I rooted mine in soil in the large clear Dixie cups. Last night, my husband said - wow, its gonna get kind of crowded in here before Spring. Wait until, he gets home tonight, I repotted into 1 gal pots today !! The root masses came out of the cups really well, out of 12 only 1 fell apart !
