Are you kidding. I forgot to even buy a couple of candy bars.
BTW the system seems to have a ghost.....look at my second post above. :S
Has anyone else noticed how thick the walls of the pumpkins are this year......ours are at least 4" thick (the very fine carving knives aren't long enough to get all the way through)
#2 out of 4........had enough for the night and I'm thankful I don't need stitches yet!
p.s.Glenda you've got to send me the pattern for Elmo......pretty please!! :)

I guess I'll quit posting, cause it's the second time tonight. Mine just seems to jump to a different spot in the thread.
Anyway...... I never get any kids here. Some years I've had two.
Plus I understand pumpkins are pretty scarce in Manitoba this year. I heard a fellow from a growers cooperative interviewed on Friday. Their average crop is 1.2 million pounds and this year notta. Not even one to give his daughter he said.
You can buy pumpkins here, but they are probably a lot more expensive. Very few local growers had any. Just like a lot of other crops. The rain just hasn't quit since August.
Geez those pumpkins are amazing. Do you use stencils or something? We still have to carve ours, and Im not the least bit creative on carving. I had planned to google 'pumpkins carving stencils' or something like that.
Linda some are from the Pumpkin Masters Kit (theirs run the most bucks), others we picked up from a Kraft Co. giveaway, and others from knock-off companies. We skipped the finer patterns this year (Pumpkin walls were way to thick....must be from all the rain we had). You'll need to buy one of the kits to get the finer carving utensils...follow directions for carving carefully or you will break the saw.

You are amazing artists!!!!! We bought candy....then ate it....the house was littered with little chocolate bar wrappers...lol! Now we're on the "second wave" of candy - it should hold out until tonight.
LOL....that does seem to be a problem in our house as well Shannon.
Thanks for the compliments everyone.......you should also take a look at this thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/465628/ lazygirl1 and her DD did one that will knock your socks off!
I cannot take credit for Elmo or the spiderweb. Hubby did them with his Roto-Zip, and a dremel tool!!!
Pam, I will try and find the site where I got the Elmo pattern. I just did a quick search but couldn't find it just at the moment. There are some great sites on the internet. Now to just find the one that I actually used!

Been dark for a while now. No kids here. Found some peanuts, gum, animal cookies. That along with some loonies and I'm ready in case the neighbors kids come by. I think they must be teeners by now, but some could come......you never know. The last year I thought I would do Halloween, I carved a pumpkin, lit everything up, made real goodies and not one kid came. The ones we knew had all grown up and strangers don't usually bring their children out of town, unless they are visiting. So how many kiddies are you all getting?
spelling!!!!

Echoes, I feel bad for you & your Hallowe'en last year!! :-( :-( :-( What kind of goodies did you make? If we had kids & lived nearby, I definitely would've made the drive.
My mom told me that one year in Saskatoon the city decided to hold Hallowe'en on the 30th...she didn't know about it & wasn't ready - she was all set to make popcorn balls for the next night. Missed the whole thing. Boy, the good old days when you could make home-made treats. Now, you have to label each one with your address & phone number...so few people bother anymore.
We've had 28 so far, not bad for a windy, rainy evening. Two years ago we got 100, last year 1. Here you have to put something Halloween-y outside, like a pumpkin - if you only have your porch light on, no one will come. When we lived in Edmonton, a porch light was all it took. It's a pretty good system either way, as long as everyone knows the "code"....
I'm sorry to hear that too echoes......forgot what Hallowe'en in the country can be like. :(
Shannon, you are so right. The code. Although I have no idea what the code is. We are too far off the road for anyone to see a pumpkin. If it's really wet and muddy, we'd just as soon they didn't come in and that sure applies to this year. I guess I wasn't very clear. I haven't had more than a couple of neighbors kids for the last ten to twelve years and for a few years before that we had none, after the kids close by grew up. Kids want to do the tour as fast as they can in town before the candy runs out.
we've had 4 so far. our front light is on a motion sensor so we also have the inside door open, as well as candles in the window.
Cheryl's the one that goes and answers the door. She's the kid person. Likes to see them and talk to them, loves babies. Me one the other hand... give a dog anyday.
Linda
The night has just begun.......
Well, we finished the night with 36 trick-or-treaters - if you count the one taller than me, who must have been dressing up as a "guy", because he sure didn't have any other type of costume! Now we have to figure out what to do with the leftover candy....hmmm.....
Echoes, I wouldn't know what to do in your shoes. Maybe a huge, lit ghost on the roof? Or some orange, flashing XMas lights or something....sounds like it'd be a lot of work & hard on the electric bill. Somebody should post a sign in the post office or something, getting everyone to either do Hallowe'en or not. Then the school should bus kids around to the farms. Yeah, that's it! (big talk here, not much action...lol.....)
echoes after reading Shannon's suggestion I remembered what my in-laws used to do (they lived out in the country as well). They placed a number of straw bales at the edge of their property, about a week before Hallowe'en, and made stuffed scarecrows out of old clothes and topped them off with heads of electric pumpkins. The neighbors really enjoyed them and kids starting dropping by again.
When we first moved in we had about 20 kids come....after they got to know us it rose to almost 200. Now they are older and we have around 60....the neighborhood is aging and we need young blood again.
No, thanks. I'm just fine the way things are. Guess I've never mentioned that I'm a recluse......well most of the time.
Well, I think it's over here. We had between 50 and 75 kids. It was kinda nice. Some cute kids. Awesome costumes! I was impressed with how many parents were with their kids tonight. That's nice to see. Had a few big kids, but not bad. You know you're getting old when the parents of some of the Lil' ones looked like they could have been trick or treating too, LOL.
we had 5, all young. Lots of fireworks going off around, good thing our dog is a bit deaf now.
Well the witching hour is now at hand (in my corner of the prairie), pumpkins haven't been smashed yet and we're off to hide under the blankets.
HAPPY HALLOWE'EN!!!!!!!!!!!!
count here was 36 goblins - took the dog to work with me or there wouldn't have been that many. GG handed out the goodies and kept a running total. Once Cap and I were home only the really brave came up the driveway
a very nice evening for it. GG disappointed that none of the kids would perform
Now, isn't that the best photo! They look terrific. I bet Sugarpop loved it.
Time to empty the peanuts back into the big bag and put the cookies and gum away. No one came again, as expected. And now I don't have those chocolate bars around to tempt me. And that is a very good thing.
Brenda
:-( Can I have a cookie through cyberspace?
They are very tiny, those little boxes of animal cookies. Shouldn't be too difficult. Open your mouth.
Okay, I'm facing west-north-west....fire away....
Done. Hope you had your lunch first.
