CALL TO ARMS...let's make the PDB work!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

We, who have been growing hoyas for a while (Leslie, Awanda, Susan, Mel, Patricia, Dianne, Heather...oh gosh, I have missed some, forgive me) have enough photos to choke a camel...AND we are certain of many of our Hoya's IDs.

So...let's put up on the PDB the photos we have...flowers, leaves, growth, remarkable traits to help ID...you know.... This could be a terrific resource for everyone on this forum AND "out there"...So...my picture of a leaf may be different from, say, Mels...but that doesn't matter...leaves can be different. Perhaps among all of us we can show the variances within the leaf, flower etc. We don't need Holotypes or microscopic photos of the inards...but the best photos you have. Milan...you up to this?

This will be a marvelous resource for all of us...not just those just starting out...ALL of us. Between all of us, we can make the PDB really a key on the Internet...I know it will help me...and it will help Dave and everyone else.

So...if you are sure of your IDs...and have a camera...lets flood the PDB and put as many photos up as we can. The more the better....

Carol - see there!

Valley Village, CA

Carol, this would be wonderful, I'll do all that I can to help. I think I have a few that I can contribute. I don't have flower pictures but I do have some leaf pictures, darn it's cold here. Norma

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Oh Norma...that would be great. As soon as hit SEND I thought...OMG, Norma must have tons of pictures!!!! Oh, it would be great if we could do this....I have lots of flower pictures...and will go out and take leaves/pot pictures too. DG SHOULD be a focal point for plant ID...the PDB is so well set up and Soooooo easy.

HEY, Milan...d'you think there will be enough room?

LOL...ve vill make da vroom!!!

New Iberia, LA

This is just a test picture, please forgive me if it comes out too big are it's a cat,I sure don't want to get a cat picture started!!!! this is a Royla purple.

Carol, This is a great idea... My problem at the moment is many of pictures were on my old computer. My ex-bro-in-law is rebuilding it for Jesse (actually he's making Jesse do it with his instruction). I tried to copy them to CD but it didn't work. I'm told they are most likely still on the hard drive, so I may get them back in time....
The other half of my problem is getting used to my new camera. I need a $50.00 power cord because it eats batteries like a baby drinks milk!

It's been so long since I've played with my photos I have to relearn web-shots.

Oh, and my old camera isn't compatable to my new computer LOL! Ain't progress great! LOL! There is most likely a download somewhere!
I'll try to help once I get these issues resolved....

Diane, your picture looks good!

Long Beach, CA

That's a great picture, Dianne. Very clear and shows the color of the flower perfectly. I have one like that (plant not picture) that I thought was pubicalyx 'Red Buttons'. What is the main differences between these two cvs? Anyone?
I love your little snail hanging thing too. So cute!

I actually thought about posting a "please post pic on PDB" note yesterday, you beat me to it :)
Posting pictures here and on PDB is very simple.
A few notes when posting pics at PDB.
1. You can upload any size of picture but large pictures over 800 pixels wide will be automatically downsized to 800 pixels wide by the system here, thus to save upload time resize your pictures to maximum 800 pixels wide. Also the system will compress to a 70% quality level Jpeg so again to save upload time use Jpegs and compress to 70% quality (but you don't have to)
For Windows XP users there is a handy little tool called "Picture Resizer" which once installed makes it easy to resize pictures just by right clicking on the picture file and choosing "Resize Picture", it'll then create a new file (normally, but can be changed in the preferences) with the resized picture.
The program can be downloaded from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
2. Pictures are screened by DG staff before released to the PDB thus your picture will not immediately show up. Pictures are bulk released every day but note that single picture uploads by a member will get priority over members which uploaded several pictures on the same day, thus upload 1 picture and wait for posting the next one until after the other one had been released to PDB. You can see if pictures are pending for release on your "My info" page.

Dianne, very nice pubicalyx RHP you got there, congrats.

Lesli, if your camera uses standard battery sizes then I can recommend to you to get some rechargable NiMh (Nickel metal hydride) batteries with a charger.
As for your old camera, if you have a removable memory card on it then you just would need a card reader on your new computer and get the pictures that way.

Just as a little hint here, DG is a large community and has many useful Forums and areas for it's members
For questions on cameras and taking picture do not hesitate to post/look in the Camera Talk forum : http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/camera/
Computer related Problems/Questions go here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/computer/
Problems/questions regarding Daves Garden including Plants Database, Garden Watchdog,... look/post here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/dg/ Note that DG staff is very helpful and is always open to suggestion to better this Website.
Often overlooked is the "Extras" Page: http://davesgarden.com/extras.php

...And much much more :)

This is a great idea; I have 5 different established hoyas, 4 of which are identified. I also have 7 cuttings, one identified, so will wait on those. I have only two of my hoyas posted. I must remember to post my unidentified hoya for help - I just call it a varegated bella/minibell, but I'm sure it has a much more sophisticated name...lol. I'm going to look in my "archives" (i.e., photographs). My original motoskei was over 20 and still fairly healthy when I left it behind (keeping cuttings!). It was the most incredible bloomer and I have some pictures that are amazing. The "baby" bloomed for the first time this year and also bloomed like crazy.

How fun and a great idea, I have been thinking of adding pics for a few weeks too! I added a few this morn, so we will see how long it takes to get them up...
I can't wait to see everyone's photos!!
Raven

Aaaaggghhh........heartbreak! I had a Royal Purple and didn't even know it.... it's one I had to toss because of mealy attack! It was huge....*sob*....
Terrific pic Dianne! Awesome idea Carol! PDB will have an incredible Hoya reference! :~D

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OKAY!!! So, it looks like we are all on the same page. DH has set a standard on our computers that photos be 480 X 640 which allows for maximum efficiency in storage...and I kinda/sorta know how to manipulate them. As soon as our Master Gardener Plant Fair is over next week I can devote a lot of time to taking a loading photos.

Not being primo blooming time, the flower photos will not be new ones. I am redoing my flower photos to be a la Christina Karlsson ...close up, with leaves, calyx, side view showing corona/corolla forms...this way one doesn't need a multimillion$ microscope to ID a hoya. David Liddle does his photo IDs this way and they are terrific.

It will be great to have a place we can all go to for quick help...

Marcy...There is a difference, quite slight, between the two per Chris Burton. One has bigger leaves than the other (tho' for the life of me it is hard to tell unless you have the two side by side)...I will go thru my files this weekend and pull the details out...they are someplace!!!!! :-)

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OK - this is what Chris Burton wrote to me (and I have paraphrased it): If the two are sitting side by side and you know one is 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' and one is 'Red Buttons', 'RHP' has the longer, thinner, often a bit twisted very splotchy leaves and the 'Red Buttons' has the smaller, infrequently spotted leaves. Both exhibit the mottling of the flower (wrongly called Chimera) and the purplishing (new word of mine, not hers).

Hope that helps.

New Iberia, LA

You know Carol I often wondered why the leaves were a bit twisted!! By the way thats one of your babies I bought two years ago a friend ordered from you and I also ordered that plant and four others. When you put the red button flower and the RHP together I don't see the difference in flowers but in the leaves I do.She bloomed her head off this summer also the red button. Now if only Ruthie would do a show?!

Dianne

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Dianne...for 'Ruthie' = sun sun sun. The more sun/light/heat the better! She is one tough cookie!

New Iberia, LA

I took this picture this morning,Making sure I have the right id on it, all green macrophylla. The leaves get rather huge on this hoya and very fast growing. It doesn't have to even bloom in my book, just a awsome foliage.

Beautiful. Looks like you still have that one outside. What kind of temps are you getting now? Do you leave it out all winter?

Dianne,

WOW, beautiful plant!

Shirley

New Iberia, LA

Thanks guys I'm sure proud of this one,Yes there still outside but today I will start moving them in.Right now it's only about 76 at night and we keep hitting high 90's during the day. They are telling us we will get in the 40's around wednesday so my more tender hoya's will be going in,sad part about it it might only last for 3 or 4 days then back up where is ideal conditions. If we get a hard freeze it will be in Jan. or Feb other than that we have tropical weather. The only bad thing I don't like about these conditions is the bugs,I buy deep woods off by the case.My Carnosa's stay out unless hard freeze and they have seen temps of low 40's but that isn't a week of that, it's more like one are two days.

I have so many pictures, but I want to make sure the id is correct before I put them in the PDB.

Dianne

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi all, please don't think I don't want to participate, however, I don't know how to post pictures. I have been in school all week, just got this thread. I will have hubby show me how to take and post pictures this week. I am in an accelerated learning class for obtaining my real-estate license. Lots of work, but I took next week off. Heather

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Beautiful plant, Dianne!

I hear you about the Deep Woods...I have cans all over the place!

Heather...posting pictures is really really easy. And if I (a formerly blond computer challenged type) can say that...you won't have a problem!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

For the "practical" side of this...it would be a good idea to include in the picture and ruler or something to judge the size of the leaf/flower by....and let's all agree to use inches....o.k.? Botanical measurements are in metric...but....

Anyone want to go metric? That's o.k. too.

Long Beach, CA

I looked over the PDB to see what all it involved. It looks like you not only have to do the picture, but a bunch of questions on the plant too. Like genus, species, etc. A whole line of questions even if it is poisonious or not. I can post a picture, but I have no idea how to address all the questions that go with it.
I also notice that under "HOYA" there are a lot of names that have no picture to go with them (they already have the questions answered). Could we just post a picture to one of those? However, I did notice that some are a bit wrong. Such as Wax Flower carnosa "varigata'. That looks like Krimson Queen to me. I have a good pic of that, but don't really want to put it under that name.
Marcy

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Marcy...I was stumped by all the questions, too. Then I realized that they had to standardize the questions and choices for everyone...so...best not worry about the one's that don't pertain. Actually, since environmental factors play such a big factor...I don't think alot of the questions are relevant.

Yes, you CAN just post a pix and ignore the rest...and you can just make a comment and not post a pix...

There is a box at the top "Report an Error"...which I have done when I have made one posting the wrong pix or in the wrong box...it works!!! A real live human comes back to you and confirms they have corrected it!!! Might inform Milan about them too....I was just on a posting spree, not a reading spree!

Between all of us, we have a good opportunity to make a great PDB for Hoyas the world can use...

New Iberia, LA

I also took this picture and just had to share. This is my hoya Latifolia,Well I think it's Latifolia?biggest leaf is 8 inches long and 6 inches wide.Grows fast in my Zone.

Good grief, it's catching up with the banana tree in the background. Ha. ;-)

That is a very nice looking plant.
Marcy

New Iberia, LA

Marcy let me tell you about those banana trees...he was looking high and low for them and we found them where someone was trying to kill them,so he cut them down and moved the stumps...well I said one day you will regret them..sure enough time has come there all over(waiting for them to come in the house) ha ha...They are the first things to fall when cold weather comes,I never thought banana trees grew on concrete,he keeps asking hey you want banana trees? you can't give them away, very pretty but out of control!! If this plant is Latifolia it is one of the biggest ones I have ever seen, leaf size I mean. Thanks

Dianne

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

I saw that Raven and Carol been busy posting pics, thanks guys.
Carol, question in regards to HSI 037, would you know by any chance if this is the same as pubicalyx GPS 282 from Paul Shirley?
Mine from Paul hasn't flowered yet (just got the cutting mid year) but it has the pubicalyx leaf shape without speckles which would fit the HSI 037 discription.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Gee, Milan...don't know. Might have to wait til it blooms to be sure.

Carol.

Little Falls, MN(Zone 4a)

I can sure tell there are some very smart folks out there who know their hoyas. Me..NOT included!!
Therefore, I will put in a couple of pics with names on their tags and if anyone can give me info on these I would appreciate it. Thanks to all of you!

Here is another one......Thanks again!

Thumbnail by cochise
Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Cochise...your first picture looks right to me...H. kentiana.
Your second picture looks like H. brevialata ...or H. incurvula...or a number of others...but knowing EA, it is probably H. brevialata...but, don't take that to the bank!!! Leave are very deceptive.

Long Beach, CA

Those were the same two Exotic Angle plants I was able to find at Stater Bros. this past spring. I think you are right with the IDs Carol. Mine have grown into HUGE plants and are very healthy. The kentiana bloomed all summer. No blooms on the brevialata tho. It has just been vining all over the place. Ha.
I have a small kentiania outside still to see how low it can go (temp. wise). It has been getting down into the 48 degree mark at night, and all the ones I left out are still doing fine.
