This is a picture of an White-lined Sphinx Moth on the salvia. Only was around for about a week. Here is a link about this moth.

Great photo Kruch72. I love the Black & Blue salvia & the hummingbird moth makes a nice contrast with the blue.

Glad you enjoy broots, that was one plant that we got from Ball Seed plant sale. Three foot tall by about four foot wide, and a what a hummer magnet. We have been growing red plant's for hummer's for a couple of year's and this blue salvia is the best. Was able to collect seed, but not as easy as other salvia's. You have to keep eye on pods because seeds drop quickly.

I'm grateful for the seed info, as I was about to try and collect some. Did you every dig one of these up? They have huge tubers in the manner of dahlias and I imagine they can be divided and/or overwintered in colder climates in much the same way as dahlias. So if you can't get much seed you might want to try that.
Great photos!

I know what you mean about it being a hummer magnet. I have always grown red tubular flowers for the hummers & for the past two years have been growing the B&B & that is where the hummers spend most of their time. Have also been trying to dig it up but have been called out of town both years & the frost had killed the salvia by the time I ret'd. I have never tried to save the seed as it always drops the seed before I get around to it.

Just dug up the plant and no wonder the plant was so big check out the size of these tubers. I am gonna try a store it like dahlias for my climate and see what happens.

That's a whopper. I have a hard time getting mine out of the ground but they aren't that big mainly because I am in a much colder zone. If you happen to remember come next spring, I would like to know how it works out for you.

Check out Brugie's post on this link. That is what I was planning on doing. Got an email from hummer_nut telling me exactly how to do it.

What kind of camera do you use? It sure takes excellent pix. I am hoping to get a new one in '05. Right now I am dreaming of the Oly5060.

Broots the camera that I have is a Kodak DX6490 Easy Share 4 .0 mega pixel. Very happy with the camera for outside pictures, but inside picture with low light come out very dark. I am still learning alot about taking pictures and I got a tripod to help keep camera steady.

Oceangirl thanks for the info about the tubers and I will post next year to let you know how the plant does.
