Stevia, Sweet Herb of Paraguay (Stevia rebaudiana)
what a beautiful stevia!!! did you grow it from seed? i had one a few years ago and did not realize that it was not a perennial like the label said so i left it out for the winter and KAPUT....all gone. now i can't find one anywhere. i once read a story about two major manufacturers of artificial sweeteners (the two biggest) collaberating and convincing the fda that use of stevia was akin to use of cocaine. for years the fda kept the plants from being imported into this country. i would love to have more. let me know where you got yours please.
What a well grown plant! I planted about 20 seeds this spring and only got 6 plants. I only have one left, blooming its head off. Unfortunately it isn't setting any seeds. I think my area is too cold. The leaves are very very sweet and I didn't notice any ill effects from using them. I was able to get seeds from Pinetree Garden Seeds

I did not plant seed I got mine as a tiny little thing from Park's when they had their sale this year, I left it in it's own pot for a long time and placed it in this planter and it took off, Earlier this year it had some liliput zinnias as company.
It was fairly inexpensive so if it doesn't return I will just get another one from the same company. I have had great luck with Park's Plants and seeds.
I've been interested in Stevia too! How does one use the leaves as a sweetener? Can they be dried and stored? Does anyone know?

I have then dried and crushed to a powder...i used a mortar and pestol, as fine as you can get it. I do not have the measurenments written down but you can play with it a bit and you'l become a stevia whiz. I believe there is also a stevia information site I do not remember the address though sorry, In the summer I take a fresh leaf and put it into my unsweetened tea with and let it sit for a min. I also normally add a mint leaf also. Orange mint is great for that. I will try and find the site for the stevia info soon.
Thanks for your help Buffy690
