looking for Episcia starts

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I'm looking for flame violets, I have none, but I have african violets I can trade. and I have lots of other things I can trade too.

I have a perfect pot for several diff varieties to go into the same pot, and I'd like to fill it with these flame violets.

Hiya Kathy_ann,
Episcias are a "hot item" seems right now...I know I've done my share of shopping $$$..lol

The ones I have are still too small to share but maybe someone else can share a piece or two...if no one answers your plea, you can checkout eBay .
There were still a few listed and a few for a buy it now, too.

They are cold tender so shipping for a lot of folks is already too late in the season . If you don't get any now please let me know in the spring, I hopefully will have some I will gladly share then.

Thanks, I went there a few weeks ago, looking for these, I saw a couple. will have to go back,

kathy

I agree that they are a "hot" item. I would love to know a nursery where I could buy some large ones. I don't think we'll ever see these in the big box stores.

Mine are still too small to share and some are just dragging along so I don't know how many will survive this year.

I wonder why they don't carry Episcias in the chain stores, heaven knows they would be rich right now...lol.
Just watch I bet the market gets flooded with them next year they will be everywhere and we will be off looking for something else...lol

Have a great day ...

you know, I had no idea they were such a hot item LOL I have this wonderful pot, that I 've been trying to figure out what to put in them, and I did research and figured this would be neat, since they mostly trail right?

I did find lots of them on ebay, I had one once, not knowing what I had, and gave the darn thing away, so im stupid I know LOL

Awe Kathy your weren't stupid, just not ready for their charm yet..lol.

I really like them a lot and so far I haven't killed any...( she says with her fingers and toes crossed)

Here's a smaller jar with a Mini African Violet in it in the center...it now has some tiny ferns, a micro mini begonia and a small Black Jewel Orchid.

oh yeah, I just bid on 4 episcias, i'm so bad. I need 9 diff ones to plant in my container, but will be happy with 4 of them for now LOL

i'll keep watching ebay.

Wow! Ms C...

That's awesome! Of course, we already knew you were a talented girl!

What does your container look like? Make sure it's not too big, I made the mistake of planting my episcias in an urn planter. I found out that they perform alot better if their roots are crowded. They also hate getting their leaves wet.

Many people grow them in terrariums but mine grow extremely well in the same conditions as plain old african violets.

P.S. I've been growing these for a while, I'd like to think I started the episcia trend. JK! But that would have been cool!

Thanks for the compliments all... I 'm pleased with the way they turned out.

Congrats Kathy and welcome to our addiction..lol

I put mine in a terrarium for a couple of reasons...
These are my first so I wasn't too sure what to do with them culturally speaking.
I had a huge tank I didn't want to get rid of or move but didn't like it empty...
Also, for me here we run the AC all the time and the house stays rather cool, there aren't many places to put plants without a draft and so I figured if I put them in the terrarium that would protect them from the constant temp fluctuations & drafts.
I also wanted to protect them from garden bugs from the other houselants coming in & out.

I took cuttings of each as it put on a little growth and am testing those in different places in the house to see where they like it the best. At least if I kill one I will still have a little piece left to start over without the expense...lol

When spring 2005 rolls around I will put a few out on the enclosed patio by the pond and see how they do there.
