Fresh lemony fragrance

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Wife bought one of those room deoderizers, for my plant room,so for a couple days, thats what I was smelling, fresh spring fragrance, not lemon,so I started looking around among the plants,in the garden room, when something white got my eye,,,white butterfly ginger, finally bloomed after 3 years, forgot all about it planted in same pot with a majastey palm.

Pretty Don.

Tropicman, I have recently acquired this ginger and some others in a very generous trade here on DG. It arrived blooming and our noses won't rest until it blooms again next summer. How do you winter yours until spring? I don't have a greenhouse - just grow lights.

BS,I have mine in a garden room, that has picture windows facing south and west, they get midday afternoon sun,and I water very sparingly during the winter, what I think has happen here,is the amount of sunlight they were getting then moved then inside ,less sunlight, triggered the bloom cycle, this is the first time this one has flowered.

Hmmm, Tropicman - I notice in the database for Hedychium coronarium that this plant likes constantly moist soil, with the crown almost at the surface. Maybe those cultural preferences are not so much for its winter dormancy phase as for its summer burgeoning phase?
Do your ginger leaves kinda brown along with being watered sparingly during winter?
Another DGer said successful wintering of this ginger - for her - depended upon drying the roots well and storing in a bag in a cellar around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
I hope my memory is working now.
Thankx in advance for any thoughts and congratulations on your flowering.

Yes the edges of leaves do turn a little brown, but if I'd mist more than once a day.I might be able to keep it to a minimum,I think its best to keep them growing, and not go dormant, for the simple reason, more likely to flower sooner and easier than starting from a dormant rhiszome.
I grew this in a pot all summer, and just brought it in for the winter,it is recieveing less sun than it was,I'm not sure if that triggered the blooming,or it was its time to flower.
If you have the room and a sunny window,I'd keep it growing.

Will do. BTW - we accidentally stumbled upon a foolproof (we should know) method of overwintering a tropical waterlily. We work with Nymphea daubiana because it is so adaptable to all sizes of containers down to tiny. A container with glass sides makes all the difference - we use a 2' tall pickle jar donated by a friend under a grow light. Containers with opaque sides always failed for us.

Also, Tropicman, while I have you in my clutches, do you know of a type of adhesive that stays tacky that could be applied to yellow cardboard squares to attract and trap whiteflies?

Yep!
I use tanglefoot, sticky stuff, works good on yellow solo and dixie brand cups and plates,I also take yellow vinyal material glue it to 4ft pvc pipe and then put tanglefoot on it,it easier to slip a 2inch 4ft pipe down between plants, heres a pic on how I overwinter some tropical water plants, wash tub,and a clear light cover.

Back in the 60's, one night, I couldn't sleep and turned on the radio to a classical music station. Did you know there's a duet for soprano and contralto for which only one word is sung?

Meow.

Methinks an operetta in Duck minor might make a nice follow-up. Has anyone out there heard this Meow Duet? Any idea who wrote or could have or would have written it? The duet is sung seriously, with elegant caterwauling, straight presentation.

Tropicman, I think you and I have a new libretto with which to moon over our winter gardens.

BS,reason you couldn't sleep, listnening to classical music, when Gene pitney, and Bobby Vee were making great musid to sleep bye!!!

Takes all kinds to make a snore - will see if library has any CD's of their stuff. Thankx.
