Night-blooming jasmine blooming now Is this unusual?

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

About 4 weeks ago I purchased a night-blooming jasmine plant off of the internet. It arrived very healthy but quite rootbound. I carefully unravelled the roots, planted in a nice-sized container and placed in a southern window where it receives indirect sunlight. I've watered regularly, misted occastionally and noticed a lot of new growth. Tonight as I was looking at my plants, I noticed a very pleasant smell and was surpised to find only one open flower. There are many more that look like they will open soon. Is this unusual? How long does this type of plant bloom for?

I think it blooms for about 4-5 days. Wait till you smell it. Oh so heavenly.

Even with only one flower, the scent is so wonderful. I've passed by the plant several times tonight to smell it. Looks like there are about 80 more flowers that will bloom soon. Can't wait.

Emily, if you have 80 flowers open at once in the house, you might have to move your plant to a room where you can close the door! I'm not kidding, if one flower emits that much scent, imagine a whole plant full of flowers. Mine is still outside, this last flush was very nice, a few dozen flowers open at a time. It had a flush a month or two ago that was overwhelming! Hundreds of flowers open at once, the scent was so strong that it almost took your breath away. We'll keep our fingers crossed for you that your flowers open a few at a time so that you can enjoy all of them!

When my parents were newly married they lived in Hawaii and there was a Night Blooming Jasmine planted out where the garbage pails were kept...in our family they are known as Night Blooming Garbage Pails...the scent of the flowers overcame the smell of the garbage!!!!

I have them planted all over and they go 'off' at different times. I also find that if I prune them after flowering they re-flower more quickly!!! I do love them!

Here's another but a little closer. If you look carefully, there's the starts of the flowers in a couple places.

This is the closest I could get without the pic being blurred. Looking at this pic and the last one, any guess as to how long before flowers bloom?

They bloom on new growth. They bloom in flushes or what ever you want to call them. It blooms, rests, blooms again. It's neat how they have no fragrance in the daytime, but in the evening it's almost overpowering.

Emily, Ronna is right that the fragrance can be overpowering and actually unpleasant when it is super strong. I bought one before I knew better then dug it up and discarded it after I couldn't take it any more. My neighbor had an 8-foot tall shrub which literally stunk up the whole neighborhood. I was grateful when she cut the whole thing down. If you are prone to migraines, this plant has a reputation for creating them. Some people like the fragrance; some people really don't.

The first summer after I moved into my house I was met by an overpowering sweet smell one night. The next morning I looked around and did not find anything with a blossom, nor could I detect even a hint of sent. It took a few nights before I realized that it was the plant just outside my bedroom window. It was six feet tall and maybe four feet across. I since moved it somewhat farther from the bedroom and now 30 years later it is still growing well. Occasionally the frost kills it back but it always returns.

I am told that the white berries are poisonous. Check with others to be sure.

I love night blooming jasmine! Mine is blooming now too. I plan to dig it up and take it to the farm with me. My mother loved night blooming jasmine so I have always had it.

I have 5 dogs- I would rather smell the Jasmine than their you-know-what!

I'm getting ready to move mine a little farther from the house! Do you think if I cut it back to about 18 inches tall it will move okay? We do not freeze down here, so things grow actively almost year round.

Cala, you can prune this one to the ground, and it doesn't mind, and it will come back bushier than ever. I did that for a while before I finally dug mine up.

I will do that this weekend! Thanks Clare. I'm going to put gingers where the Jasmine is now. Their fragrance is a little more subtle.

My Jasmine put out around 15 blooms last night and I could still smell a faint scent this morning. :) Smell so wonderful. 15 flowers is the most I've seen since it started blooming. Can't wait until it's warmer and grows as it's only about 18" tall right now.

I love this plant. Unlike Susie, I would love to move mine closer to the breezeway. It has a very strong fragrance but strong fragrances do not bother me. I love to take cuttings and put them in a little vase and put in them in my bedroom at night. LOL.....I know Susie would never do this.

Mine's now been blooming for 9 days :)

Are these easy to root? I have one I want to cut back but wanted to root the cuttings if I could.

TIA
Sandy
