Peegee Hydrangea, Panicle Hydrangea 'Grandiflora' (Hydrangea paniculata)
Hello,
I recently bought a young Little Lamb PG Hydrangea. I would like to train this plant to be a tree. The main stem has been broken and several 3-4 limbs have branched out about 12-18 long. I would like to know if I tried to braid (intertwine) these branches into a one trunk, let it grow, and then let the top branch out......Would this possibly work? and would the trunk be healthy? ...... or would this be a crazy idea?
Thanks so much for you reply and input.

I don't think you would get a reply ;(
I have Little Lamb, and from my year's experience with it I would say that it would be harder to train to a tree form. You could tie it up and get it to grow more upright. Other paniculatas like Pink Diamond,Limelight or Tardiva would be easier. I have a PG called Pee Wee that I eventually got to be a tree form by removing older growth and choosing a new shoot that was growing nice and straight to focus on.
Al,
Thanks for your reply......I think I will just tie it up, as you suggested and try to get it more upright...
I have seen Limelight and it is beautiful, I will check out the other two also...
I am new to this site and am still learning where to post. I went to Garden Talk and have found lots of great info on there. I guess I should have posted to that site.
Thanks so much for your help.
Janice :)
