Wanna see how we dig holes?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OK..see the rocks? See the BIG rocks? This is a hole digger on our new road...digging holes for the Royal Palms that will be planted there. 41 holes to go...and that's just for the BIG ones where the land wasn't ripped by the D-9. Ah, gardening in Paradise!

You lucky dog!!!!!!!

Homestead, FL(Zone 10b)

Woo Hoo! Cyberageous and I could use one of those in South Florida. We can only dig an inch or two before hitting coral rock. My digging tool of choice is my trusty 6 lb. pickaxe.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh my goodness, and I complain about clay!

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

thats not too bad... least the rocks are small.
when I lived up north, we used this bar (we called it a nasty name I won't repeat).
Basically it was a 40lb iron pipe that we'd slam into the ground to jack rocks out.

DeepRoots - actually, he is digging thru Sheet Lava (we call Bluerock)...probably about 100'deep and not everywhere...there are pockets where it is crumbly. He tried to talk us into FoxTails that need a smaller hole! But we figured the time out/$ out and went for the Royals. DH delighted with the bigger rocks he is getting up (mostly rolled back in the hole)...for the walls around more shallow holes we can build UP.

Know that digging bar well...called an 'O'O bar (like saying Uh Oh)..weighs about 30lbs.... When I had a really really bad shoulder my MD wrote a Prescription to my DH saying "No 'O'O bar and no WeedWhacking". Honest!!!

Now we order in cindersoil to fill the holes and plant. You can imagine why we cringe when it doesn't rain for 5 days!!! I think we will put a lot of peat in the bottom of the hole to keep some moisture down there....El Nino expected this winter and that means very dry for us.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh how i wish i had that doing all the planting this month.thats a real planting machine

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Tazzy....got your seeds yesterday!! Thanks.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

That's a Texas size hole digger!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Without David and his wonderful machine, we could never ever get thru that sheet lava. Even where it is broken up, it might take a full day (or what seems like) to pry a big hole with the 'O'O bar. AH, I am all for machines!!!

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

so essentially in Hawaii you are growing hydroponically :-)

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Almost, DeepRoots, almost! There are cracks, especially after the big hammer is done...and there are some places where the rocks are a different kind of lava (more crumbly) but basically, with 180" of rain per year, it is sort of hydroponic! The lava sometimes collects water for a long time...and we can tell by the wet debris in it...and so we plant trees/palms that like their feet wet! The first year the rain drove me bonkers, but now I love it!

So, he is finished! 41 holes for BIG trees/palms where WE want them...everything else will go in where we can pry enough room!!!

Thanks, it has been fun sharing this with you.
