Canna seeds
Hi, Sheran! We must have very similar taste...here we go again!
Hey Sandy! How's life in my old hometown? Funny, I just realized that I used to live near both of you!
I'd love some of your seeds - would you like an SASE?

The old town has changed drastically and not for the better.. This is an area that's known for Migrating birds. With all the trees being chopped down and Million Dollar homes being put up..Birding is down...
Sandy
I would like to try these. Haven't grown canna from seeds. Thanks so much.

Sandy
P.S. If you want seeds just holler
This summer was the first time I grew these from seed and I had 100% success. (until a couple rotted from overwatering)
It looks like I have the same cannas and boy do they make seeds. I'm always so curious
about things so I had to go ahead and try and grow some of them.
What I did was:
took my dremel too and held the seed really tight and sanded a spot on each seed until I saw white.
then I put them in a dish of water and let them soak over night. The next day I peeled the outer layer of skin off
and put them back in the water. I had to change the water every now and then because it would get slime.
Then just wait and watch. You'll start to see a little root growing out from the seed. When it gets about a quarter in long
take them out of the water and plant them in good moist potting soil. Then DON"T over water them or they will rot.
I only water mine when the soil gets dry. I planted them when they got about 5 inches tall and they are stil doing great.
I hope that helps all of you.
Gina
Gina, thank you so much....
In the Winter how do you store your seeds?
I'll be donating some of these seeds to a local Nursing Home.. Pretty sure they'll enjoy the beauty of them. With what you wrote I'm sure our luck will be good... Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Sandy
Sandy,
I think they're so tuff it doesn't matter what you do with them...lol
I just have mine in a little tiny cup on my counter.
This summer was the first time I ever had any so I'm not sure if
they need any special care. It seems to me that when harvested they
are dried out already. So as long as they stay out of the sun they will be fine.
The reason why I say they are so tuff is because I have one seed that I didn't
do anything to, still sitting in potting soil doing nothing (for three months now).
It looks like I just put it in the dirt. As long as they don't get cut or knicked
they should be fine.
76summerwind you have mail :)
GSkinner thank you, I printed out your instructions
I'm glad I stopped in and read this thread. Thanks for the info on starting the Canna from seeds, Gina. I gathered half a ton of them myself this summer...not that I needed more plants... grin...I'm curious about growing them from seed.
~julie~

I wish you luck.... If you want more just let me know...
I'll get out some tubers for you in Spring... Remind me!
Sandy
If we are depending on my memory, we are SO in trouble! When do you start the seeds?
I would like some seeds, please. Sounds like a fun project. ;o)
I would like some also if you have any left.
Tanya
Sequee, I don't know. Maybe someone else can tell you.
I only saved them this year .I have never tried to grow from seed.
I think out of curiosity. I'm going to follow GSkinner's instructions. I have a Dremel, I use it for grinding down my dogs nails!! Works great ,I've been doing it for years...If it grows I have a friend who has a small Greenhouse. I'll put it with her knowing, I'll never get it back!
See Ya,
Sandy
