Does anyone have any bittersweet seeds or vine cuttings. Also, does anyone know how to tell the sex of bittersweet. I know you need a male and female plant to get the berries. Can't really find any info on how to sex the vines. I know that it takes alot of time to germ. the seed. Help please.
WANTED: American Bittersweet seeds for SASE
Mini, I don't know anything about bittersweet, but I live in an area where it grows prolifically. Folks here sell it at the curb market as cut vine for making arrangements, and as ready-made wreaths..I know where there's a very good-sized vine growing on the side of the road right now. Do you think if I dug it and sent it to you, it would give you berries next year? I'd be happy to do it if you'd like. PLMK.
I know that you would need a male and a female plant to get the berries. Does it have berries on it now? The male plant has no berries and the female has the berries. It is around here also but I have 14 acres and of course not vine on my land. I can't seem to find it. You can try to send it to me. I will gladly send you what you need to mail to me.
Cindy
Cindy, it's loaded with berries right now! Tell you what, I'll go get it tomorrow morning when I take the kids to school. When I get home I'll check it out size-wise, and send you an e-mail, ok?
That will be great. I have to take father in law to dr in the morning but will check email when I get home. Thanks
I Have some if you contact me first of the week. Shirley
Bittersweet is something that is scarce here. It used to be quite common but with the roadsides being spryed for weeds over the years, it's gotten very hard to find. I would basically give my right arm for some! Every fall I drag hubby out to go out riding around on back roads trying to spot some. If we get lucky & spot some it's always imnaccessible! So anyway, I'd loooove to just have some planted so I have my very own supply. I don't know all that about having a male and female stuff, but if I have to have one of each that's okay too. Marclay, you mentioned you might have some? Anyone willing have some willing to share? I'll pay postage. :) TIA (thanks in advance)

I was mistaken about it growing here. What grows here is Oriental Bittersweet. It's all over the place here.
Shirley, I would love to have some I will contact you next week. It is here also but I can't seem to find any. I live on 14 acres and of coarse I have none.
Until next week then.
Shazbot, the oriental bittersweet is to evasive. I am afraid that if I plant it here it might take over the whole state of Ohio. My fellow Ohioans would probably strangle me.
Thanks for checking for me anyway.

I just planted some that I ordered from Michigan Bulb. Not the best online nursery, but it was fine. Actually my bittersweet vine was the largest, healthiest stuff they sent me! I paid $4.99 for two plants- a male and a female. They are tiny- I mean they look like they were started from seeds just months before being sent out. The best way to describe it is like the 6 pack of annuals you can get from Walmart. I got two plants that were in plastic containers about the size of one of the "cells" from those 6 packs. But like I said, they are fine. The price was good, don't have to mess with germinating seeds, etc. Jamie
Thanks for the info tex--I will check out Michigan Bulb. If I get some I will put in greenhouse over the winter. That is not a bad price for the size. I have seen some gal size plants on the internet that go for 15.00 or more. Can you see or tell which one is the male or female. I know the female will have the berries, and obviously at that age they wont have berries yet, but was just wondering is there a difference in the leaves or shape of the leaves or something.
One was smaller than the other and seemed to have a yellow tint to the leaves... but that could be a nutrient defeciency for all I know! :) As far as shape, they look the same to me. And you're correct- no berries yet! BTW- I think Springhill and Parks both carry this- or at least did at some point. Springhill carries these "infant" plants too so you can often get them pretty cheap!
Ok Mini- sorry! I just did a search on the other two nurseries I mentioned and it doesn't look like they have it. Michigan Bulb DOES still have it but it's back up to $7.99 now. I ordered mine in the middle of summer when it was on sale- I forgot about that part! But anyway, they do have it. Jamie
Hey Tex--that is still a good price. Thanks for checking.
Cindy
No problem- we'll have to compare notes and see how they do! :)
Just keep me posted.
Hey Shirley you told me to contact you the first of the week for some of your bittersweet seed. Do you have any to spare. Please let me know.
Cindy
