Have Purple Sugar Cane

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I have sections of cane, cut into three nodes per cane, three canes per trade. I have three trades(I think I'm stuck on the number 3). I am looking for gingers, especially kahili ginger or shampoo ginger.
Here is a picture of a plant. I had to cut them back because we've had lots of wind the last few days and it was blowing them over. These are only hardy in zone 9 south but are easy to grow in a container that can be brought inside before frost. They grow up to 8ft tall but can be cut back to any height and will regrow. They are easy to start from cane sections, just plant the sections about 4inches deep and keep warm and watered. You should get sprouts in 2 weeks.
The canes and leaves of this variety are purple as long as they are grown in full sun. You can see how the wind is blowing in this photo!

CaptMicha, thanks! It's still a work in progress.
Unique, the tea plant sounds interesting. I love green tea, but haven't ever grown my own. Are the plants hard to grow?

Orangeville, PA(Zone 6a)

Hi, Calalily. Would you send a cane section for postage? Have no gingers. :(

Susie
You think they might make it here in zone 8b new zone 9a?? If you are talking about H. Gardnerianum that is Yellow. I just got a few from Kay. I don't want anything else I have to keep in a pot. GH will be triple stacked again this year lol.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Donna, I don't know if they would make it there but you can always cut some canes back and start new plants just in case. Yes, the ginger I'm talking about is the one you mentioned. I love it but managed to kill mine when I moved.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I SO need this plant. I had a trade set up for it earlier in the season and it feel through. Let me see what I can find to trade. Your yard looks lovely. You've done so much in the short time you've been there.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

O.K. I'll give it a try. Will e-mail when I ship.

Kristi, do you have any salvias like guaranitica or transylvanica or van houteii? I love them but didn't realize I was keeping them too wet and they croaked. It has taken me a whole summer to learn to water all over again! I feel like a newbie!

Hey Girls,

I have the variegated and the purple sugar cane. I'm leaving my in the ground this winter and keeping some rooted plants in the green house. I'll let you know if they make this winter. Here's a picture of the variegated. I just love it!

Susie,

I have the shampoo ginger. They are all in bloom right now. Let me know if you want a piece.

Thanks,

Daisy

Flowerjunkie, I would love a piece. Since you already have the purple sugar cane, what were you looking for? I'm trying to think what I can take pieces of.............
I love the variegated, where did you find it? I've noticed some of the green cane they grow in the fields here has purple stems.

Hi Susie,

Hmmm. If you want to trade. I'm all for that. I can send a blooming size shampoo ginger, the blooms are red right now and oh soo beautiful. I can also send you a rooted variegated sugar cane. I bet it will just love your weather. I got both the variegated and the purple sugar from an old man in a trade about two years ago at one of our swaps. I think I gave a piece of my variegated budda bell bamboo for it.

Let me know what you have. I'm interested in anything tropical, variegated, sucullents..oh gosh...just about anything. I've also stated collecting begonias and brugmansia this past year. I'm hopeless.

If I've failed to answer anyone, please email me.
Flowerjunkie, you're as hopeless as I am, lol. I went to a nursery this weekend that had bamboo. Now I've got to figure out where to plant some! (I didn't buy, I just looked, lol. Those plants were HUGE and I'm trying to figure out how to get a hole dug that's big enough for them)

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

UH OH! Bamboo? I'm going to try my hand rooting timber bambo starts. These get to about 30 foot tall. Talk about monsters. I'll let you know how that turns out. I have a couple of very nice variegated bamboos also that I'm going to see about dividing next year.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Flowerjunkie, these people have about 30 different bamboos! They have a section in their display garden with mature sections and they sell clumps, but the clumps are in those pots that are square on top with sloping sides, put together with wingnuts and have to have a forklift to load and unload. He said he would deliver, but I had to dig the hole! Wonder if any of my neighbors have a backhoe?

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

WOW! That sounds huge. Good Luck with the back hoe.

Send pixs when you get it all in and beautimus!
