Ok, I left the seed pod on the plant until it fell off all by itself. Now what do I do? Lay them out and let them dry or plant them right away? Epi people? HELP!
Epiphyllum seed help
Open up the fruit, and take out the seeds, let them dry. Then plant like you would any other cactus seed. It is best to put in 25-50 seeds or so to a 4" pot, put the soil in and pat down by using the bottom of another pot, then sprinkle the seeds on, and on top had a #5 grit that is used for the bottom of canary cages, do not pat this down. Give warmth, and keep slightly moist, make sure they don't dampen off, give some sunlight for them to grow, indirect sunlight. Remember they are a cactus. Kachinagirl: You mentioned that it would be interesting as to the color of seed. Are seed not true to the mother plant? Do growers usually get a variety of colors from the same pod? bob
On www.epiphyllumsociety.org they have a interesting section on crosses I was surprised at what the crosses produced.
Also remember that it can take around 7 years for a seedling to bloom.
I was told that the first yellow flowering epi took 20 years to bloom. I don't have that much patients. LOL
