Lisa,
That looks like the same tree that they have at the Garden Gate in Gulf Breeze. Theirs is very large and it does produce seeds. Don't you just love them? That's a neat red color. It was in bloom a while back. Is yours still blooming now?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Very nice we had these all over in San Diego.I love em.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Just started blooming. I do hope it produces seeds. I love this plant.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

That is really pretty. I love Red flowers of any kind.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I have it growing in a pot and brought it inside for the hurricane.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It's good that you did that. It could be a couple of states away, otherwise. Growing in a pot it won't get as big either, but in Iowa it would be another pot to bring into the house for the winter and I'm getting too old for all that lifting and carrying to the basement. LOL!

I'm still watiting on the question of seeds. Could turn into another greenhouse project for this overextended gardener.!

From the picture, the leaves resemble those of the rubber tree/plant we commonly grow as a house plant. But those flowers !

The name for it is actually Erythrina crista-galli, or Cockspur Coral Tree. After doing a little websearching, apparently it does make seeds. Keep your fingers crossed!!!!!

Ahhh, Okay. I have this tree. Compliments of DonnaB. Donna should be able to help you with any questions about this plant, seeds, germination etc.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Hugo, did yours bloom yet? Mine just started blooming.

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi rylaff - My fingers are crossed. Hope you will post if some seeds appear.

Thanks, Peter

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Absolutely, this baby is worth sharing.

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

No,
Mine isn't blooming for me. I have the other coral tree for you. The local native low grwing one. If the seeds are anything like the one I have, they will be bright red in the form of bean pods.

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

I have this plant and the common name of it is Crybaby bush. Mine has already bloomed. It may not make seed pods until it gets some age on it. I have one that is a year old and bloomed but did not set any seed pods on and the 4 year old bloomed but never set any either.

This is a bloom cluster on the oldest one.

Lisa,
Where is Trish. I've not seen or herad from her in a while.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I havent seen her in a while on this site. However, she recently posted on ABADs site. She has been pretty busy with some presentations on brugs. I think she was kind of frustated right after the storm because alot of her brugs and tropicals got pretty messed up.

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

Ahh. I see. That's a bummer. I know the feeling (as you do too). I guess I'll have to send her an email and see what she's up to. Thanks.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Aren't they spectacular? Some of them make seeds and others do not. I had one for about 10 years which never made seedpods, even though I tried to hand pollinate it. I don't know if there are perhaps male trees and female trees? Anybody got any idea?

Anyway, you don't want to put it in a pot. It gets a HUGE root
system on it. After they get a few years old they get better about not freezing down. I was located just across the lake from New Orleans and mine would freeze down to about 5 feet high every year. Basically, the limbs froze out toward the ends. We just cut them off where they froze every spring and it got beautiful very quickly.

One year we got a really hard freeze which killed it all the way to the ground. We mowed over it. I was heartbroken, and looked most of the summer for a replacement, to no avail. Low and behold! About July, here it came up just like nothing had ever happened to it.

I have four of them now, all very small because we moved and they have not gotten any age on them yet. Also, we are a little farther north now, so they might become freezedown shrubs here.

I also have erythrina herbacea (mamou coralbean) which has a brighter red flower and is a bush. The leaves look the same. I also have a pink version of this one, but have not yet seen it flower.

I also have erythrina bidwilli, which is a cross between critsti-galli and herbacea. It has the brighter red flowers but larger than the herbacea, and it is a bush where I live. It is the only one that blooms all summer. It is sterile.

I've been trying all summer to get one of these to root for Donna B.
I'm not having any luck yet, but I know I can do it. I've done it before. 'Must not be holding my mouth right. LOL

I know it's the wrong forum to do this, but I have a few seeds for herbacea if any of you want a few for SASPE. If you are interested, please send me a message.

The seeds germinate very easily. I got my seeds from BarbW and got almost 100% germination. Gave them all away to whom ever wanted them. Hugo are you fertilizing it?? The last one I just gave away was blooming. The one I bought 2 years ago is finally blooming like crazy but has set no seed. Couldn't believe the seedlings were blooming and it took 2 years for my huge one to bloom. Not sure if it needs a mate or not to make seed. Have to remember to ask Barb. Do you know what color the Herbacea is you gave me. Kay says there is a red and a pink. Your is doing wonderfully but no blooms yet. Kay just gave me one to so I hope they end up being different colors. I think she said she gave me pink??

Mc Call Creek, MS

Yep, Donna, I gave you a pink, and you said you had gotten a red from somebody else.....Hugo, maybe?

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

Donna,
I just recently fertilized it. I though since the one I gave you was found in sandy soil this one might not need all that much fertilizer but I recently decided to fertilize it anyway. I guess maybe this is why I don't have any blooms.

The one I gave you is a very light red color (almost pink). It will bloom for you in late April. That's when they bloom here like crazy in the wild. Oh, and I read that you can also do cuttings and they root easily from the one I gave you. I have on for Lisa that I've been hanging on to for her. I think she'll like it. Actually, I think she'll go totally nuts when she sees it in bloom for the first time. I did. I kept telling myself, "And to think that it's a wild native plant". Just awesome!
