I have a frosty pink brug, too late for pictures tonight, i'll post them in the morn, but it looks like it has this disease , Wondering If so, do Ineed to dump the pot too, or can I bleach it out, it's a huge pot and I dont' want to get rid of it. Also, can I cut the brug above the disease and root it. or should I dump the hole thing? I don't need the brug as I have several other frosties .

stranglebrand?
Kathy, Isolate the Brug and have it tested at the county extension office or burn the plant, pot and all or put it in a garbage bag and pour clorox on it so no one else will get the Brug. You wouldn't want to use that pot for any other Brugs. JMHO
I agree that if you have a sick plant, and it's easily replaceable, get rid of it ASAP. The picture will help - other people on this forum like Monika can give you an expert opinion based on that. Having a sample of the plant tested is a good idea, too, if you have access to an ag. extension office in your area. There was a really good thread recently from Gretchen Kaufmann on this topic: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/456593/. The tests will help you determine if you have anything to worry about.
Personally, I think it will be OK if you just dispose of the plant (completely - don't put it in your compost!) and thoroughly wash out the pot in the driveway, then spray it all over with bleach solution and leave it empty over the winter. Large pots can be expensive. To be extra-safe, you could just use it for something other than brugs next year. But, if it's a cheap pot, or it's really beat up anyway, may as well get rid of it.
I have read on ABADS that bleach does not kill SB. I would not hestiate to toss a brug & all in a second if it looked bad. I have done it. Esp. a Frosty. Frosty is the most common brug. Toss it and get another! Even if it doesn't have SB, if ithas something wrong with it, toss it and do not get another. LOL I am so bad.
Your right kell. "Off with her head " .......LOL
I couldn't find the thread I was really looking for ... aw shoot !
Anyway Kell, You may be 'bad' But yer durn good at it.
Here is a thread that Kell started to consolidate stengelbrand pictures in one place:

Hope this helps you!
I too would get the plant tested and get rid of soil, pot, the whole works...
ok, ok, I"m thinking about the pot thing, it 's realy nice, 5.00 worth but not that nice if it kills another brug, specially a special brug, not tha t the frosty isn't special, I have 3 others just like it, This frosty grew up in the deep shade, damp area, no sun almost, and it's the only one that has this problem . So I know not to put them into the deep shade where it's damp all the time.
here's some pics
I did want to mention, that this tree was always (loose in the pot) it was one of the ones that would fall over first when the first strong wind came along, I had to stake it several times, it was always getting damaged by falling over or something falling on it.
BTW, I did pay l2.00 for the pot not 5.00, Still thinking on that one LOL what if I put a piece of tape on it, saying not to use for brugs any more and use it for something else that gets big LOL that would work.
here's another picture further up the tree, pictures a re a bit fuzzy, that camera of mine doesn't take good close ups even though it has a macro
I'm not sure that you have SB. Looks like it could be injuries too. I hope Monika will come along and tell you for sure. Anyway, if it is SB, don't wash the pot on the driveway. SB is in the soil. You would then be washing the soil out into your yard or other places that could cause more problems in the future. If it is SB, chances are good that the area it was sitting in, even tho in a pot, will be contaminated with SB, if it is the nasty little bugger. The reason I say that is because we water our plants deeply or it rains heavily on them and if the water soaks through the potted plants and into the ground, it takes the disease with it.
oh boy, I won't wash it out in the driveway then, I still have the plant isolated, hoping monika will rescue the plant. gosh, it's hard to tell the diff between damaged trunks and stranglebrand, this thing like I said took a beating most of it's life with things falling on it and it falling over, it got scraped quite a few times.
kathy
Kathy, it doesnt look like SB to me. I would say, that it is a injury.
ok, that's great news,
kathy
Kathy, maybe you could get it tested - could be Janet Carson, from LR, or P. Allen Smith, also from LR, could tell you. Good Luck!!!
I agree with Brugie and Monika . Just looks like injuries. You can see new tissue starting to heal the wounds.
Ha! Was searching for Stranglebrand photos, and came across this thread in my search, Boy we've come along way since this thread, I wouldn't hesitate now to throw out a 50.00 pot much less a 5.00 pot. LOL
I was a real newby to brugs last year, learning more every day. and This SB really bothers me now.

i also had one plant infected if it wasn,t for the quick eye of my friend Brenda i would not know it. we sent it to Cornell school of forestry and they confirmed it. they are trying to come up with a cure. so the brug went into a plastic bag destroyed pot was also destroyed and ground disinfected. it is too bad we have to be plagued by this but with so many people handling these plants all over this what happens.. now i will not let my guard down Bob
How did you disinfect the ground, Bob?
good question brugie, I only have a few brugs in the ground I think I'lm going to keep them all in pots so I dont' have to worrry about the ground being infected. I don't think you can disinfect the ground. Once diseases , any kind gets into the ground, their theremore or less permanantly, aren't they?
