This poor plant has been soooo loyal in low light and forgotten waterings and has bloomed and thrived. But now it is getting a bit top heavy. Can I just cut a cane and will it sprout new leaves from there? Thanks so much!

I have not had much luck doing it that way. Have you tried air layering. I think it works better. I am sure someone else will give you there ideas also.
You can cut the leaf top and root it in a glass of water,be sure to change your water every 3days or so. Then plant it in a pot. They can actually be grown in good water culture.
Or you can root it in moist sand/potting mix with perlite. The base can eventually sprout new growth with a little humidity, added warmth etc...just don't over water the base it or it will root. You can invert a class jar over the top of the base to create a little humidity or even a plastic zip bag.
Hope that helps some.
