Summer's End Apple Chow-Chow

Louisville, KY

At this time of the year the garden may have a few green tomatoes and perhaps a few kinds of peppers left. A good chow-chow is a perfect way to preserve them for winter meals. Enjoy!
Gary/Louisville

Summer's End Apple Chow-Chow
1 gallon green tomatoes
3 cups vinegar
12 Granny Smith apples, peeled and chopped
3 teaspoons black pepper
1 quart onions
1 quart sweet peppers
6 cups sugar
4 teaspoons salt
1½ cups hot green or red peppers
Chop all vegetables. Mix all ingredients in a large pot and cook for 30 minutes. After it comes to a boil, fill sterile jars and seal. Makes about 12 pints. Put less peppers if you like mild chow-chow.
