Hi hoya-buddies, here is my other "unknown". Thanks in advance for helping me give it a name. :~D
ID?
Thanks, Ceedub! I'ts been a while since it bloomed, but I'm working on remedying that. I might recognize the flowers...........or perhaps one of our illustrious hoyen-maven friends can tell us! :~D
Well - the description I have written down (not the official description) is "green leaf with white/cream/pink margins" is H. carnosa varietas variegata cv. Tricolor and the Trademark name is Krimson Queen. Some of your leaves have the "dimples" in them that identify cv. Krinkle 8, but since they are not consistent in the plant I would say it is just the nature of t he beast to give off some dimples.
My personal feeling is that it has been so long since these "sports" or cultivars were named and described, that with cross-pollination, self pollination and what have you...there are just a whole lot of sports and variations "outside the box".
Hope this helps.
Ah, so I was almost right ... well, on the right track anyway ... thanks! So I have a krimson princess and a krimson queen. So does the "krimson" in the name referrs to the red leaf colour and not the flowers? The flowers on "queen" are a very light pink whereas the "princess" is almost a raspberry. Or do I actually have a "princess"? http://davesgarden.com/pdb/showimage/54837/
I sure like the all pink/white vine in it....your plant has nice, showy foliage....
I think the TM name is just what the grower dreamed up....LOL
The difference between the two is that the Krimson Queen has colored margins on a green leaf and the Princess has green mrgins with color inside.
I am told that if you let those all white/pink/cream vines grow longer, the plant will suffer and ultimately die.... because that vine is growing without producing any energy for the plant (no green color for the "factory") and is growing by taking the energy from the plant. If you cut it it would not strike roots....it is like a parasite. Pity, because they are so pretty!!! Others grow them with no trouble...so this is just passed on as what I have been told....:oD
Carol,
do you think that if the plant just had the one pink vine and the other vines grew normally, that it would be fine and not harm the plant? i have taken off pinkish vines like that and they still grow back but not overtake the plant itself..
Sandy
Thanks Sandy, I think I will pinch the 'albino' stem and not let it get too long. I like the color too, but don't want to stress the plant. Perhaps if I limit it's growth the other stems will keep-a going strong. However, if this plant ever starts to go downhill, that albino stem is a gonner!
Thanks for the botanical help Alohahyoa. I did have a Krinkle at one time (the mealies did it in), so who knows....perhaps there's a Krinkle "in the woodpile" of this plant's heritage! LOL :~) Hey, Alohahoya...will that albino stem ever support blooms?
I don't think that "albino" vine will produce blooms(I am afraid that if I said "NO" I would be challenged ) but I am sure somewhere someplant has produced one once ...and usually when you cut them back, they will return. Keeping it there as a novelty couldn't hurt the plant that much...but I think a long vine will suck too much energy away...doesn't make any clorophyll (did I spell that right?) to support itself.
OH, goodness....don't the mealies just love the H. carnosa clan!!! I lost a huge H. 'Krinkle 8' living in the back of the back of the back of the shade house where it got no rain and it was almost totally white. YUCK!! Went into the burn pile quickly!!! Now they all live out under the trees in the rain. :oD
Carol, a good debate always keeps things interesting! lol...i was wondering about blooms on a albino vine too.....
I am with you on the albino vine though Kachinagirl, i think mine will be a gonner again if its growing faster than the others or takes over.....nice looking plant you have anyway, I just wish those varieties would grow a little faster....
Aaauuugghh.........HEARTBREAK. I lost 4 GORGEOUS large plants to those darn mealies, plants I had for years (I'm a "newbie" because now I care about heritage). I HATE them. One of the plants was one my Grandmother had given me in the early 1970's........ouch. I must ask my sis if she still has a plant from Grandma's....we're all going to Mom's this weekend, maybe she can bring me something to start a new plant from. This plant pictured has had some mealies, but I got really agressive.........used a drench for the soil (same as I do when ants set up housekeeping in my Cymbidiums on the front porch.....Diazanon in water, run thru pot.....let stand for 10 minutes.....then FLUSH POT LIBERALLY with clear water..........Malathion would probably work for mealies since they're soft-bodied.......I just get MAD....kinda like my Dad who used to kill gophers with a handgun.......but that's another story). Then I use a Q-tip and alcohol on any Mealies showing their fuzzy selves on the leaves. Anybody have better ideas?
How neat that your Hoyas live outside Alohahoya.......houseplants all for me.
Kachinagirl...what a loss!
Have you ever tried the Imidocloprid drench, sold as Bayer Tree and Shrub Control? It works like a charm for me, but others have told me it was so-so for them. I am drenching all my plants at the moment...all the ornamentals since we have so many chewy bugs! This even works for scale!!! Hoyas are tough, and you can (I HAVE) dunk the whole plant in alcohol or soap and water or both.... When I see mealies I spray with 100% alcohol...doesn't hurt the plant.
Problem with growing anything in the house is that with so much outdoors I forget about inside...and it is rather dark indoors. We do have some parlor palms and they are lucky to get water, while the outside plants get everything they need. Total opposite from "my former life" growing everything indoors in Seattle....
Carol, I am not sure just how to tell what mealies look like. Silly I know. Is it when you see a web like white on your plants?? I had this on one of my plants , really bad. Can not get rid of it. Have it all by its self for now. never saw this before. Will this go to all the plants? I am also looking for a book or a web that tells me about bugs on plants. Do you know of one? Anybody??? Binky :((((((
binky, mealies look like little clumps of cotton batting; they like the creases of my cacti but fortunately leave my hoyas alone (in another room on another floor!). I do the alcohol in QTip thing too, but its not getting rid of them, so I might have to improvise somewhat to get further into the creases. They will attack the roots too, but I think that's another type - I could be wrong there though, it could be that if you don't cure it on the leaves, it'll go into the roots-or the other way around.... I've had that spider web problem before too, and it grosses me out too much to try and fix it; I have a "bug problem" with myself ....
Ceedub, Thanks, I have tried to find a book and looked up on the web. But I just can't find what I am looking for. So what did you do for the spider web problem?? I just hate to throw away my plant. I love my Hoyas! Do you think using alcohol would hurt??Binky :((
Binky - If you can get a magnifying glass, the mealies look like white bugs with tiny legs, one form has a longish tail and their egg casing are blobby. Straight alcohol sprayed on them dries the mealies out! But I would also check the roots. If it looks like there was chalk in your soil with white stuff, then best to drench your pot. White Fly and spider mites make webs...and the White Fly will fly into the air when you disturb the plant. The head Etomologist here at the Hawaiian Department of Ag. told me he dunks his plants in a bucket of soapy water...lets the soapy stuff into the soil too...and then rinses them off with a strong jet from the hose and runs clear water thru the pot.
I once took a large bottle of alcohol and ran it straight over a H. compacta in order to clean the bugs out of the folded leaves. It worked...didn't kill the plant!
Thanks Carol, will try it!! I checked the ones I got from you ( which is out side) and they are fine, Don't know were they came from. Just pop up one day!! Thank goodness I have lots more soil!! :)))))) Binky
Carol, when you did that much alcohol, did you get it in the soil too? I read somewhere else not to get it into the plant's medium, so when I do it, I have been laying the plant down on the grass to spray it. If it doesn't hurt to get it into the soil, I am going to quit going to so much trouble to keep it out. Thanks for all the info here.
Marcy
You and me Ceedub! Creepy-crawlies! But I'm giggling like a fool. :~)
I think it was Mel who's son poured a bottle of alcohol on one of her pots one time...she was paniced but nothing happened. She did rinse it alot...I try not to get it in the soil....
YEP, Brad, my dear son, poured an entire bottle of alcohol into a 3" plant and I thought the plant was a goner. I leached the soil several times and there was no damage what so ever to the plant.
Oh to go back to the good ol' days when my biggest fear was Brad pouring the wrong chemical on my plants! After 6 months of teaching him to drive and riding with my body braced for impact and my eyes closed, I now have to worry each time he goes out on the road by himself.
