"Looks" like H. carnosa but then it "could" be one of a couple of others. Flowers tell the answer best. Where did you get it, and what was it called when you got it? I have a HUGE NOID I think is H. carnosa but until it blooms, I am sticking with NOID!!!

Thanx Carol...can't remember the bloom it's been so long (this is one of my original "help me make them bloom" plants). I got it from a cutting.........must be over 20 (oh my!) years ago. This is a newer plant from the original... who was mealied-to-death. I took a branch, doused it in rubbing alcohol (ok...I was desperate!) then rinsed it, cut it and rooted it in water and tossed the mother plant. BELIEVE me, as soon as I get bloom on any of my 'unknowns' I will post pics! Thanks for helping! Karen

I think it is the one sold as Hoya Rubra. I'm sure I have this one-grows really well. I think it has publicalyx like leaves.

Hoya people are so nice! I can't wait til it blooms so I can put a tag on it! :~)

Could you please tell us WHO sells that as Hoya 'Rubra'? I'd like to send that person pictorial proof and also a copy of the US Patent Docket of Hoya carnosa cv. Rubra (it is illustrated with pictures) as proof that the pictured plant is NOt 'Rubra.'

Hoya carnosa cv. 'Rubra' (trademarked as Krimson Princess) had white, yellow or pink in the center of the leaves and green margins.

I keep reading on line that the hoya pictured is Hoya 'Rubra' and I have copies of every major hoya seller in the world (at least those who sell mail order) and not a single one of them lists anything resembling this as 'Rubra.' In fact, the only place I've seen it mislabeled as 'Rubra' is by newbies on internet forums. I've also noticed a tendency of newbies to "buy" what is said by other newbies, while ignoring the opinion of those with 50 or more years of experience and research behind them.

No wonder hoya nomenclature is such a mess!

It is obvious that the plant is some forum of Hoya carnosa or Hoya publicalyx but it definitely IS NOT 'Rubra.'

Chris, I have what I believe is a H. Rubra, Krimson Princess, and have posted it. No one has challenged it so I assume its correct, but can I please draw on your superior knowledge to check for me and make sure its correct? Thanks. http://davesgarden.com/pdb/showimage/54837/

Edited to add: never mind, I just saw your post on another thread that you're not interested in helping any more. Too bad.

Chris, I've seen the all green carnosa as well as two different variegated types
sold by none other than Englemans (Exotic Angel) labeled as Hoya 'Rubra'.
I ran across one of my Hoya kentiana yesterday labeled Hoya 'Greenleaf'
carnosa.... With them distributing plants all over the US it's no wonder Hobby growers stay confused! They should save themselves a few pennies and do away with labeling all together!

Kachinagirl, Very pretty plant!

For heaven's sake, the lady didn't say it was written in stone, it's not her fault that she bought a plant labeled as such, why is she being scolded. This is a discussion, not a bashing. People shouldn't be afraid to respond on this forum, Susaneva, we are gentle folks here, you didn't write what you thought in stone, nor calm to be an expert on nom-in-clutter as my friend calls it. What distinguishes one from the other would be a great discussion. Does it have red stems, red flowers, why do they call it 'Rubra' variegated leaves, or leaves that are red when young. I would like to know, I have three plants named 'Rubra' the leaves sure look different to me. I haven't seen the flowers. Norma

I have a Hoya 'Red Button's it now has red new leaves, that are the color of pigeon blood, so are the new vines, I supppose that is wrong as well? Thank you for your description of H. carnosa,'Rubra' now I know which is which, and I can put the correct label on it at this time. So green borders, okay that will work. Norma

Exotic Angel did sell it as Rubra. To be truthful, the label might have read as Hoya Carnosa cv 'Rubra' because I can't remember. Anyway, I don't pay much attention any longer because all of these are labeled as Rubra.
