For 2 weekends now, we have quit sorting junk metal and concentrated on the greenery. We planted a sea almond, a mango and some crotons. I dug holes for 3 types of banana trees which I will plant next weekend. For now I have a potted avocado tree sitting in one of those holes and starfruit in the others. My job is to dig in the muck and my husband's is to dig on the coral. I'm not strong enough to use the jack hammer. The coral isn't too thick then it's beautiful dirt. He didn't feel like doing the digging this weekend so that is why those trees didn't get planted.
Each weekend we try to do a few things inside the trailer to make it comfortable to stay in on weekends and we also bring over fruit trees for the previous weekend digs. Shade is our first concern- then the orchards.
We cleared some Florida holly that has taken over a trailer and our back yard area. The trailer was torn up from hurricane Andrew then left there to rot with trees now engulfing it. When the scrap metal crusher guy comes- he needs to be able to get it out of there so we have to get in there with chain saws and chew away at it. I can't wait to get it out ! It's pretty spooky.
The construction trailer that we are fixing for ourselves isn't that big so my husband started building a porch on it this weekend.
Hopefully by winter we will have a nice roomy area to sit in.
Call me bored but here is a picture of me yesterday digging holes for the banana trees. I marked where a small pond will go. The scrap metal behind me is what I have drug out of the future pond corner so far. I looked around and that area, even tho it is full of scrap would be a good place to do the pond if for anything- drainage. It is too wet there right now and I want to use this area eventually. The dirt road is ours and goes back to the nicer part of the property.
Best news, thanks to all the threads I have read here- we made our first compost pile! There was a big wood sign on the main road into here that was for the Auto Parts business that used to be here. We worry about people coming around when we aren't there because of the equipment so we finally got that sign torn down and used the wood to make the compost bin.
