Power point presentation with music?

I want to do a power point presentation for my mom's 75th birthday showing all of the old photos and photos of her friends thru the years. I wanted to have music added to the presentation. I thought my mp3's would work, but I can't add them. My husband the computor geek doesn't know much about this and I know even less. If you can explain how to add music and what format they have to be, I'm sure one of us will get it. I'm getting short on time or I would go get a book and figure it out. I'm hoping someone out there has an idea how to present this as a slide show with music for my mom. Any suggestions?
