I have hoya cuttings and they are all individual ziplock bags and have misted them now for awhile. Tha majority of them have roots springing along the whole stem. The average root size is 1/4 of an inch.
My questions are-
Is there suppose to be a particular root length before potting?
If the cuttings are long can I cut them and into what leaf amount should I have on them?
In a small pot do I need more than one cutting to achieve a hoya plant?
The exposed roots which are not planted -is it ok like that ?
As you can see hoyas I really don't know much about-just fell in love with them.
Be Blessed, Ingrid
I need someone to help me with my hoya cuttings
Hi Ingrid!
I've always rooted my hoya cuttings in water in a small glass. I use waxed paper and a rubber band over the top of the glass, poke a hole with a pencil to put the cutting through (the waxed paper holds it up without bruising and keeps it at the right place in the water). When they look like they have a strong bunch of roots, I move them to a pot. There may be better ways to do it, hopefully the hoya-mavens here will give their input also. I'm always looking to learn better ways to do things! (PS ~ I will send your cutting off in tomorrow's mail)
:~D Karen
Ingrid -
You don't need to have any specific length of root before you pot it up...just put it in soil. If there are roots all long the stem, you could lay the cutting on the soil and they will all be used...or you could cut the cutting into different lengths. No rules about how many leaves you need...you can start with two (one node) or have more.
Hope this helps....I just stick the cuttings in potting soil so I am not conversant in water rooting...but I think it is all pretty straight forward.

My mouth is zipped closed on this one. Ingrid, this was the hardest thing for me to learn, I was used to propagating succulents, and I thought it should work the same way, NOT I do use the same soil but a different technique. Norma, keep your nose out of this.
Kachinagirl, Alohahoya2000 and Crasulady2- Thanks for all your help..
God Bless, Ingrid
I was given a hoya that came from a florist, beautiful with multicolor leaves, but it continues to have little cottony spots, about as big as a large pin head on the leaves and where the leaf attaches to the stem. I am sure it's a parasite of some type. I took it outside and washed it very well. That helped for a few months, but they again appeared. I used an oil spray to kill them off this time. The plant looks healthy, but what can I do to keep this off the hoya?
Those are mealie bugs. Just do a search for some of the mealie threads here and do a google search for mealie bugs. You will find lots of info on getting rid of them.
Marcy
Yuck.
Great advice Mairzy...there is lots of information out there.
Just remember: They don't like water (so showers are great). If you use alcohol, use 100%...no watered down stuff.
Good luck!!!!
Thanks for all the great info about taking cuttings.
Debbie
Linden...if you just get a few mealies...a spray with 100% alcohol will work on them...it dries them up...doesn't hurt the plant. Good idea to keep it isolated from your other plants until you get them under control. :o)
Can someone tell me is it a good idea to mist cuttings regularily-they are in soil now.
Thanks, Ingrid
Sure is a good to mist them frequently especially if the general room humididty is low. You can also place a plactic bag loosely over the pot to keep them humid until they outgrow it.
BTW how are the cuttings doing overall ?
Milan
Milan, there doing just great. I have about 25 kinds now. The comnnection you gave me on Pikes greenhouses. Tom the owner said we could by hoyas by bare root and length went by the ft at 1.50-to 2.00 which is wonderful especially for the hard to find ones. Must make order now, to reserve for spring.
Ingrid
HI Ingrid and Milan,
You can order just cuttings through Pike lake? Did i understand that correctly in your previous post?.....Does he offer the same varieties as his rooted hoyas?
Sandy
Paradise/Milan do either of you have a listing of the Hoyas he has?
I have a listing but 4 pages on hardcopy, not on computer...I can fax or mail a copy to you if you like.
Sandy
Thanks Sandy! :) I talked to him (Tom) once about it and he said he'd send me a list but didn't get around to it. I'll email you my telephone # and connect the fax machine.
email sent and fax connected. BTW has he ever given anyone a list of all the different plants he grows?
Fax may be coming through :) Glad you got a list....he said he'd make one up for me but things happen I guess.
Coming through and readable to boot! Thank you very much!! :D
Hope it worked for you, Pam! ...for the life of me, i cant see anything listed as hoya cuttings on there though....lol...maybe its old age and lack of glasses
Sandy
I'll study it right now and let you know.
The hoyas are listed at the top of page 3. :D Thank you so very much Sandy!
