If one has a brug that comes back from its roots in the Spring, will it get any taller than it was before the frost knocked it back, or will it grow to the same height and stop there? Just curious -- thank you for your help! Gretchen
Spring growth question
Mine usually get bigger each year, depending on how bad the winter was of course. I do believe they will eventually reach a "terminal point", in that they won't get bigger and bigger forever.
Thanks Mary. My curiousity arose after reading Tonny's post regarding the maximum height according to where the cutting was taken. I can see where a seedling might get bigger than a cutting. And I should've specified that I was mostly interested in cuttings... Thanks again!
Gretchen,
in my area, some left on the ground come back, some don't. the Isabella i left on the ground, only came back late June. it is just now beginning to bloom, but isn't as tall as it was last year.
some cuttings i got and started last winter, did not grow so tall. i guess Tonny's theory is correct, depending on where cutting was taken, and how big the cuttings were. some short cuttings grew to about 2-1/2' tall others are only 1-1/2' tall. whereas, big fat cuttings [about 1-1/2" in circumference hardwood cuttings] and taller cutting did grow to nearly 4' tall. hth
Thanks, MaVie! I have five Isabellas in the ground...I sure hope they come back. They're all about 5-6' tall. Better take plenty of cuttings just in case... :) Gretchen
u're welcome Gretchen :). maybe good to add, i did not fully cut to the ground. i mulch with pine tree leaves but not too heavily.
this year, i will experiment on that same Isabella. i will cut it down to ground level and mulch heavily this time, to see what will happen. will keep u posted, on what i find.
i try to get ahead of the game, i have taken lots of cuttings. mostly are rooted. i only soaked them in water. one bottle per variety, to avoid any virus problem in the future. i wash bottle and cuttings, at least once a week to avoid fungus growth... just making sure, that i will have something going just in case i lose the mother plant.
Last year was my first time to see a brug that came back after winter. It grew to about 10 feet plus. This year, the same plant came back as TWO plants and is about 14-16 feet tall. Now, that was three days ago and we have just received lots of rain and we had had a two month drought and i did not water that particular plant but once a week, so I expect it will continue to grow, happily, until we have our first frost in, about, the 2nd week of Nov and our first 'hard' freeze will come some time later, so, hopefully it will get even bigger...
Hope you will post a picture. We haven't seen your flowers for a while. I always love looking at other people's places. Heck, I'd just like to see a brug that tall. I know they do it in CA, so why not AR.
Thanks again, MaVie -- I am taking plenty of cuttings too, and may even do some in water, just to be certain I have plenty of back-ups myself.
Sherry -- Now I remember that you mentioned this to us a while back. That's pretty cool that they just keep getting bigger for you!
Kaufmann, I don't get much die back living in Fl. were I do, but when it has happened,I had growth that exceded the last year by 100%. The size will depend on the growing season.Good luck cinnabor
Thank you so much cinnabor. It will be very interesting to see what happens...
Gretchen Isabella is very hardy here in 8b. In the 2 years I had her she got about 9 to 10' and had about a 8 foot spread. Rainfall amount help determine size. We were in drought all summer and none of mine got as big as normal even Monster Brug.
Donna -- thank you! That's so good to know :) I was worried I might lose them, and of course if we have a very hard winter I might, but Isure hope not. And, I'm glad to know they might come back bigger :)
