I watched this Brug grow into a nice plant all summer. It set some buds, but I didn't think I would see them bloom. I've been keeping it on my covered porch, and hoping that one of them would manage to bloom before it had to come inside. It made it through a couple of very hard frost and then I went and broke off a bloom. To my surprise, after sticking the bloom in some water last night, I woke up to this!
I really thought it was going to be a Dr. Seuss because the leaves are serrated. (but not deeply) It's a beautiful pink, with long 2" tendrils. The picture is of it's first day bloom, and it's cool outside and cold at night. It looked white when I broke it off.
Any guesses as to what I have?
Identification? Ada it's a "lost tag" Brug from you
Oh my, just from that pic, I couldn't tell. I sent out Pink Beauty and Pink Favorite and don't remember who I sent what, as I sent out so many this year.
Sorry.
How about a side shot of that bloom?
Tree, my Pink Beauty, from Ada, is HUGE and covered in buds and the leaves are serrated and also huge. Pink Favorite, also from Ada, is a smaller plant, bugs don't bother it, the leaves are not serrated. As I recall, the blossoms on both are similar but the PB blossoms were big and fat. Right now we have windy, rain, and all those pink girls are out there with their leaves straight up, protecting their babies. Oh, yes, PB's buds sort turn up or curl, just a little...
Just from looking at the anthers and the leaves, I'd guess Pink Beauty. Bigger pictures and like Tracey said, one from the side, would help. I just don't think the leaves look like PF at all.
It looks like Pink Beauty.
Sure does!
Beautiful!!!
I had to bring in this brug from the porch ................ sure is getting cold here.
She's losing her leaves, but hanging on to those blossoms for dear life.
It's beautiful.... huge pink blossoms and what a scent in the evening!
My son (age 14 in Dec.) has started to get facinated with these great plants. (which thrills me)
He wanted an explanation as to why they smell so good in the evening and have no aroma during the day? .............. couldn't answer him, anyone have an explanation?
He couldn't stand that I was going to throw out one of the Brugs I had without a tag, so he "rescued" it and now calls it Joe's rescued Brug . I told him he's hooked for life now, and he just laughed.

TC, this is probably the best explantion I've heard! Hope this helps!
Thanks Brinda,
I thought it was to attract pollinators, and if it's night pollinators it needs the scent at night makes sense.
That only half answers his questions ............... now how does the brug know when it's night? My quess is that something is trigered in the plant by the amount of light or lack of light. Hmmmmmmmmmmm .... Mom if I put it in a closet will it smell good again .................. gotta love the questions. I told him to give it a try and let me know.
That is a good question because mine will start smelling around 6 to 6:30 and it could be light for another 3 hours. On cloudy days, Versicolor Orange will smell all day. It must trick easily into thinking it is night.
Well please let us know if the closet trick works! LOL
I've always wondered what prompts a MG to bloom. I know it's morning, but when in the morning? I've been out late at night and up to around 4am and they aren't blooming yet. Anyone know when they open? (Sorry to hijack the thread)
