a pubicalyx (one of the "silver" cvs.) with a light infestation of mealies for $15?
8" pot, full and healthy enough looking, owner says he has chronic probs with mealies and sprays every couple of days.
I've always gotten rid of mealies pretty easily...or am i just trying to justlfy a bad purchase???
Whaaaaaa....somebody tell me what to do!!!
Am I nuts to buy
Leave it!! If it's infested with mealies, then he should mark it way down. I have a Pink Silver that you can have for postage.
Someone who grows beautiful Pink Silvers is Lesli on this forum. I've forgotten what her userid is here probably Lesli2gro. If that isn't correct, email me and I'll give you her email addy. She can probably fix you up one for a lot less money.
Yes...15$ is Waaaaaaaaaaaay too much, even if they throw in the mealies for free!!!
Save yourself the heartache and money. If you do buy it, you'll risk infecting your other plants. Its more likely you've only dealt with the mealies that don't live in the soil otherwise, you would've had a harder time with them. Those dreaded mealies are bad enough but when they are the kind that live in the soil, you have to remove the plant from the pot & get rid of all the soil & clean pot.... its more work than its worth.
I agree with Susan. If you check w/ Lesli, not only will you get a beautiful & healthy plant but you'll know exactly which pubicalyx it is.
Gemila
Ditto. Lelsi's plants are the best! She is so mindful of shipping the plant at the right time. Almost all the plants Lesli has given me never stopped growing from the time they left her house to the time they arrived at mine. I think she must put something magic in them!
If she does not have one available, I can offer you large H. publicalyx 'pink silver' for postage. I still have several plants that I can't seem to squeeze into the greenhouse this year and would be happy to share with a new collector! I would consider it a pay back for those individuals who shared with me when I started collecting.
Where can you purchase Hoya plants for $5.00?
Sodapopkid111 - I got them at a local nursery - they are just babies though, in 3-4" pots. Problem is they never get anything new - krimson princess and a varegated carnosa. My varegated bella, though, I got at another nursery several years ago-it was a mature plant and they wanted $35. To make a long story short, I was able to get a cutting from it for free ... I was willing to pay, but the clerk said to forget it. My lucky day!
Sodapopkid, Glasshouse Works has quite a few varieties of Hoya for very reasonable prices, (some varieties more reasonable than others) but some have had difficultly with orders from them. I love them, though, just be patient with your orders during the busy season!

Mary Ev.
Caron...I would be glad to send you some H. pubicalyx for postage too...Can;t tell yu what they are...just H. publicalyx generics....could be Royal Hawaiian Purple, could be Red Buttons...I am not paying alot of attention to cultivar names now within a species...they ARE H. pubicalyx.
OK, got the message loud and clear, lol!!
I hate it when I get so desperate for a new plant (especially a hoya) that I'm prone to buy stuff like this!
Was thinking of looking at some of his cheaper starts but that's probably not worth it either with the mealy problem.
I would love a start to this and Thank You all for the generous offers!! I'm not particularly hung up on the specific cv. or even a particular species. This one just looked more interesting than the others he had. Actually I'm not sure he knows what he has - this was not labled and no one seemed to know (or care) so I confirmed the id with pics on past posts here (relatively sure i'm right).
But it is getting a bit chilly here and wondering if even chancing the mail is worth it (the only reason why I was looking locally)??
Heck, I rather send you one free if you are that desperate, and to think winter is only staring. LOL
Norma
Caron, I got my hoyas (cuttings and rooted plants) thru the mail last winter and they arrived alive, and grew very well. I think if you get them at this time of year you should have no problem!
Thanks good to know Eileen. I was really concerned about the weather with shipping plants now. Knowing you got yours in good condition gives me hope!!
I guess I'm in the minority here.... If it were a healthy looking plant I really wanted I would go for it *IF* it were warm enough to isolate it in a tree away from my other plants for several days.
I'd use a fairly sure approach of getting rid of the mealies. Like water it well and soak it with Cygon, as well as drench the soil.... I'd probally even take it out of the pot and remove the soil with the water hose and pot it up in my own mix, with Marathon or Bonide systemics added.
I know Hoya pubicalyx is very common, but how long would it take for an indoor grower to get a large established 8 inch basket?
I guess I'm thinking this way because I'm planning a yard / plant sale next weekend.... I have a huge 'Pink Silver' (the one with lots of siliver foliage that people call 'Splash') in an 8 inch basket trained around a hoop hanger. I paid $10. for it on sale 4-5 years ago at Pike nursery, it has spent the last 2 winters in my GH which cost me $$ to heat. I'm thinking of selling it in my sale, it will probally sell easily for $20. considering the size, it has several peduncles, and those hoops cost $5.00 - 6.00.
I REALLY appreciate the kind words from all of you about my plants! I know how annoying it is to pay big bucks for mailorder plants, only to watch them sit and do nothing. So when I do sell or trade I want to pass on things that have been in the house for a few weeks acclimating for the drastic changes they are about to go through. And also I want them to be in active growth, I think if they are growing for me, you won't get bored waiting for the first growth spurt!
Can anyone help? I'm a new hoya collector. I have 4 now, and I was wondering about a few things. Do they like high humidity? Should they be fertilized on a regular basis, and with what? And what is the best way I can ensure blooms. I GOTTA have blooms! Also, how often do they bloom?
I just got a brand new one today as an early birthday present from DH, Krimson Princess. He also came home with a couple of cuttings of Bilobata, ain't he sweet??
Shazbot3 -
You gotta great guy there.
Why don't you start a new thread...interesting questions that might get lost in this thread. Those are great questions and you might start by a good computer search on Hoya Information....lots of good basic questions are answered on them!!! Plus, the Plant Data Base here.
Hoyas are their own master...they bloom when all the right conditions happen together...and that is up to you because they are from the tropics and you...and me...well....we try. Scour the net..."Hoya Plants" should bring up some good sites.
You ask really good questions and it could take us all night to answer...when on the net these have been covered and will help....
Have fun...you are off on a great adventure!!!!
Thanks Aloha. My brain ain't workin' very good right now, or I'd have known to do that :) I've just spent 15 solid hours buying lights at Lowes, putting them up, and bringing a million plants into the basement. They're all in there now, I just need to piddle with them a bit and do some re-potting. My hoyas are stayin' INSIDE the house this winter :)
If the basket is large and the plant is healthy (by that I mean if the mealies haven't yet sucked the juices entirely out of the plant, leaving it wilted looking) $15 is a good price for a full basket. It takes several years of growing to fill a basket even when several cuttings were used as starters. If I didn't already have an 18 inch pot of Pink Silver that reaches to the top of a twenty foot ceiling (I moved it to my daughter's house three years ago), I'd grab it.
I would not put it in the same room with any of my mealy-free hoyas. I'd apply systemics to the soil. I'd hose it down and let it dry in the shade. When dry, I'd put it inside a large black plastic trash bag and throw a large dog's flea collar or a No-Pest Strip inside the bag to keep it company (no pest strips are hard to find these days dog collars aren't and can be used over and over again). I'd then tie the bag up tightly, put it in a shady place and leave it for 24 hours. I'd still keep the plant separated from my healthy plants for at least a week (I'm told mealies have a three day cyle so watch carefully). If you see more mealies repeat the treatment.
Keep the plant separated from the rest of your collection for at least two weeks. Using the treatment I've outlined. Your plant ought to be mealy free in no more than two weeks.
Do not use flea collars or No Pest Strips in the presence of chlorine fumes --- the combination is harmful to both you and your plants.
As for treating all Hoya pubicalyx cultivars as just plain old Hoya publicalyx, no way would I ever order a Hoya pubicalyx from any seller who did that. If I saw a Hoya cv. Pink Silver and fell in love with it (assuming I didn't already have it) and I was sent that ugly old Royal Hawaiian Purple because the seller classed them all the same, I'd be very irate! So should you.
What's the point of anyone going to the trouble and expense of breeding hoyas, creating hybrids and propagating desirable sports only to have them tossed in a basket with all other cultivars as if it shouldn't make an iota of difference which one one's customer gets as long as the customer's money is in the till.
Maybe I should write a letter to the editor of Asklepios and tell the readers there that the lady whose article on hoya cultivars due out in the next issue, doesn't sell by cultivar names so be prepared if you order to get what she wants you to have instead of what you'd like to have.
How about all the Gilding Eriostemma cultivars that are cause for so much bragging. Are all of them being tossed together in as if they were one too?
Some of those Hoya pubicalyx cultivars extremely differen from one another and no one should have any trouble distinguish between them. All are extremely different in appearance from the type species except in their flower parts. Colours are different too.
Customers beware. If you know what you want and are unwilling to settle for what you may get, place your orders somewhere else.
Chris
Interesting Chris, thanks for the tips.
Really glad you mentioned about the chlorine fumes and the dog collars.
We treat the hot tub with it and this hoya would have been put in that room for quarentine AND it's my bedroom!!
Does this treatment work for very persistant aphids, too?
Also, what systemic do you recommend? I'm going nuts with these darned bugs! (Mealies and aphids should respond to the same stuff, right?)
This treatment should work with all known hoya pests. I am not up to date on the systemics available in today's market. When I got advanced notice from my late husband's EPA associates that Cygon and a couple of other favorites were going to be banned but that any left on the dealer shelves could still be used, I stocked up on what may be a life time supply so have had no need check. I've heard of a product with a longer name than some impossible to pronounce hoyas is available from Bayer. I've been told by both reliable and unreliable sources that it is good.
If you can find dysyston granules or iquid Cygon, grab it.
Another thing I learned from my EPA employee husband was that many of the so-called dangerous chemicals were not banned because they were dangerous when used according to directions but because they were dangerous to people involved in manufacturing them and/or because they were dangerous when used NOT according to the label directions.
My husband bought me a rubber suit, a gas mask and all that good stuff and saw to it that I used it. He insisted on it even if all I was going to use was one of those so-called "safe" insecticidal soaps. He said, they are designed to kill, even if the label does say "soap."
Don't take chances with whatever you use -- just because it is approved by the EPA now doesn't necessarily mean it is any safer than Cygon or dysyston. It could be that they just haven't yet found out that someone died after misusing it!
Chris
Interesting point, Chris. However, I happen to know that lady does not sell all of her H. pubicalyx under the same name...they are broken out as cultivars. She does, however, consider them all H. pubicalyx. Big difference there. One is a concept of thought, the other is...well...simply facts.
Carol
I know nothing about Hoya but would love to have a couple, do you plant them now, or in the spring (when should I look for some)
Cuttings can be taken any time, really... They are often sold in the big stores (Lowes, HD etc.) starting in the Spring. You should have no trouble...but if you do, there are people here who will help.
Well, I went back down to the nursery to find out if they came up with a name, and I guess they came up with something....told me the it was "H. pseudocalyx". I asked him if he meant "publicalyx" and he insisted (quite adamantly) that he did not mean anything of the sort and that there are no cultivars for this species.
Is this really a valid name (or even a synonym)? Sure can't find any reference. Still looks like publicalyx to me (although I do know better than to try to make the distinction without flowers).
He knocked the price down to $10 and threw in a couple of mealies for free (probably just to get rid of me).
caron,
"threw in a couple of mealies for free" that's funny! Lucky you! :-)
Perhaps you would like to do a pest trade? Mealies for aphids? I have enough aphids for everyone! ;)
Mary Ev.
hehe...can't take the credit MaryEv, it was Alohahoya who coined that earlier...
No pest trades-have had my fill of aphids and scale, thanks anyway
Caron, It sounds like the owner of that nursery has alot to learn! I'm almost certain the name he gave you is with out a doubt a figment of his imagination!
Maybe he couldn't read someones sloppy handwriting or was talking to someone with a speach impediment trying to say pubicalyx! LOL!
While in Flordia last year I went nursery hopping.... one place had great customer service, a young (quite cute) guy asked if he could help me the minute I came in the door.
I asked if they had any Hoyas. He said you MUST mean Hostas...
I said "no Hoyas"....
I'm explaining that Hoyas are houseplants known as wax plants, describing the flowers ect....
No, we don't have anything like that. By now I'm in the house plant GH which had MANY blooming Hoyas.
I said sure you have Hoyas, this is Hoya multiflora, cinnamomifolia, lacunosa
ect.. ect..
At least your grower knows what a Hoya is! LOL!
MaryEv, I have been having trouble with aphids and I bought a spray bottle of insecticide soap with seaweed and after everyone gets watered I spray and my aphids have been kept at bay among out nasty bugs, there was something eating one of my leaves and it has moved on ever since I started using this stuff.
Dianne
Dianne,
(I'm trying not to hijack the thread) do you use an insecticidal soap like Safers (sp?) and do you add the seaweed yourself?
Thanks,
Mary Ev
The seaweed extract is already in it.
Dianne
Hey, all you Aphid Combatants!...you might also wage a small war against the ants that are bringing the aphids!!! I am fighting aphids all of the time on my citrus trees and I can spray til I am blue in the face but until I get rid of the ants they just come back to another branch!!!
Carol, what lady do you think I was talking about, who does not sell H. pubicalyx unlabled as to cultivars? Count ten down from the top of this thread. That lady certainly left the impression that at least in the future she didn't intend to make distinctions between cultivars.
Quote, "I am not paying a lot of attention to cultivar names now withing a species they ARE H. pubicalyx." By golly, if I'm going to buy a cultivar the dealer dang well better pay attention to cultivar names --- or said dealer is going to get bad mouthed from now until doomsday and I think you know that I know how to bad mouth!
To the one who asked about the name pseudocalyx --- there is no such name. You can find the name of all validly published hoya names, plus a few that are not valid on the IPNI web site. That one isn't there.
Chris
Chris your quote is correct "I am not paying a lot of attention to cultivar names now, within a species,as they are H. publicalyx". I did NOT say "I am NOT Selling cultivar names...."...this is not a sales platform...this is a forum that is dedicated to learning, thinking and growing within our knowledge of hoyas. If you had the wit to look at my catalogue you would see that I list cultivars...those were "musings"... Come one, Kid...get with the program!!!!!
I want to know when this bashing of a person will stop.It has come from MSN and must be stopped because people who want to learn about hoya's right now are only learning just how one person can act so badly towards another? Is this what I payed for to join? I see nothing wrong with Carol and she might not know everything but you can't find a more willing person to help! Please stop!
Dianne
Second that Dianne. I left another gardening forum recently for this very reason.
I am just going to presume that everyone here can be kind and helpful and wants to share their vast knowledge--and chalk it up to a bad day...So can we all play nice today, please?
Cheers ladies! Carol I appreciate all of the help and advice you have given to me. I appreciate everyone's help from this website. This website is based on good intentions. People helping and sharing with one another. Why should there be anything negative in that? Let's all keep on making mistakes together. Constructive critism is a beautiful thing. Heather
AMEN.
What was the name of the movie where all the little people sang "...the wicked witch is dead"? Was that the Wizard of Oz?
Let the music play...
Well get used to it. Whatever I say here will be then taken over to her forum, and I will get bad mouthed there. I'm not even a member. I guess I'm a very important person for her to mention me. Now the whole world knows all about me, and I getting more popular. People want to meet me. She will also bad mouth Dave forum and has done so previously. Why? I don't know, Dave is a nice guy.
This was going on when my kid was 14 years old, she belonged to a club, and the girls were jealous.
It was the funniest thing I ever heard. That year, she then became president of the group.
I want to thank you for supporting the spirit of the group, and what we are here for. Lets stop this childish nonsense. We have a lot to learn here. Norma
