Have you tried - Giant Rhubarb - Gunnera

Osage City, KS(Zone 5b)

I'm a zone 5 garden and after a visit to RootDoctors yard the Tropical bug has bit me.... I think I'd like to try this particular plant but know nothing about it other than the Plants Database info and the little snippet in my tropical plant book. Does anyone have any comments or advice on this particular plant ?

Thanks

Yes.... that's them..... 100 seeds..? Interested in splitting the pack and splitting the cost......? Otherwise thanks for the website link...... and be sure to post pics next year I'd love to hear how yours are doing in your zone 5.

I tried them a few times, every time they wither and die, seems they can't take our humidity.

Crud..... It said zone 6 on the info but nothing about humidity being an issue......the things you don't know..... Well, if you tried them Root I doubt I can get them to go ....... but aren't they awesome..... I had a nice sunny spot all picked out for one...... not next to my Brugs though... I'm working on a special spot for them next spring.....

The seeds are sooooo tiny !
I split the seeds with a friend in Chile. Neither one of us had any luck.

I bought one several years ago and it lived over one winter with lots of mulch, but it never got any size to it. In fact, it was smaller the second year than the first. I think these grow well in British Colombia. I'm not sure about the weather conditions there.

Dang..... there are plants on ebay but if Root didn't have any luck I suppose I should find another plant to be obsessed with........... it's really Root's fault anyway he got me started on all these tropical, interesting and adventurous plant cravings.....

Thank for the insight....... Root and scooterbug.....

I tried them to no avail. They must be really hard to grow.

The seed packet stated "To Be Attempted by expierenced growers only" or sumpin like that.

I'm experienced ---- at alot of what NOT to do ........ all good advice I'll find something else to focus on thanks for all the great input.... You all have saved me time and money that can be spent on something more tailored to my "experience" ......... (big grin)...... just I'm tired at being good at growing weeds......

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

At least you don't have to feel alone. I've grown some of the best weeds ever, this year. Some have bloomed so pretty that people have asked me what they are. How embarrassing!!

Osage City, KS(Zone 5b)

Brugie..... LOL..... that person asking would be me.......
