That is a delightful angle on a Monarch. Nowadays the Monarch is also quite common in Eastern Australia. I believe they found their own way here, but finding their food plant was already established as a weed, they stayed. They are not common down here in Victoria, but we have had an occasional one in our garden. Here is a picture I took in New South Wales some years ago.

The Monarchs in Australia are I believe from America, having island hopped across the Pacific and found all the way that their food plant had preceded them.

I will see thousands of these at Halloween. I am going to Pacific Grove aka" The Butterfly Capital Of The World". It's right next to Monterey. I hope to see a lot of this guy's buddies.
