Very pretty EWL! Is that Lantana she's on? The moths and butterflies really like my golden Lantana a lot.

Nice shots. It appears to be a Long-tailed Skipper.

That's it JPerri--just a "long-tailed skipper"? Not....Aquamarinius von skipperonia? Not Marie Antoinette Skipper Extraordinaire? Not Scissor-tailed 8th Wonder of the World Skipper? Bummer ;) I thought it quite unusual and exotic. Grin.

(Zone 8b)

Very dull name for a smart looking chap!! Great pics though.

Well, earthwormlover, we'll give it a fancier name. Long-tailed Skipper (Urbanus proteus)

Excellent--you are the bomb!!

Ah yes, Magpye, I see in the 3rd pic it's very clear what he's on. I admit I only saw the first 2 pics before hehehe.

EWL - well, _I_ think it is unusually bright and colorful and has a verry unorthodox tail too. I like Aquamarinus skipperonia myself. lol

Gorgeous!

It is very interesting! I have never seen one personally. It favors the hawk moth family. And it is common where beans are grown. Farmers call it a Bean-leaf Roller the caterpillar has a habit of using silk to tie leaves together. The rolled leaves provide the caterpillars with protection from birds and parasites.
Very nice picture!!!

Thanks, I'll watch for the leaves rolled like so. Maybe I can watch the development.

These are the guys I get, Skippers too I think. Check out that tongue! That is Helenium "Mardi Gras" that he's on.

By the way people have been asking me what camera I use . I was thinking how about a thread about what we shoot with. The camera forum is technical, this is real-life field work we do. What I think is cool is that I see such nice shots here,(earthwormlover, excellent shots!) and it interests me and apparently others as to how the shot were achieved.I use a Fuji S5000 as does Magpye and Potumup, how about you Earthwormlover? How about the rest. Butterflies and hummers are HARD to shoot (that's why I want to upgrade) yet I know that I see these good shots here. So whatca got?

I use an Olympus c-740 Ultra Zoom, its the 10x zoom that helps so much. You don't have to get in too close.

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

I have the same zoom (10x) but I am right in , to about 3 in.also. This I did zoom in on.
