Storing brugs?

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm a little short on space and I was wondering if I can cut down the stalk and store the roots of my brug in some damp perlite?

I have never heard of anyone doing that. Is there no dark, cool place you can stick it and let it go dormant? And then only water when you need to, to keep just slightly damp? I understand you do not want to let the roots get too wet over winter so they do not grow or do not rot.

You can stick that stalk into water for the winter and it should root.

Well I did that last year in the garage but I think it was too cold b/c it took a REALLY long time for them to come back and I think it affected the growing. I'll try the basement this year.

I keep my big older ones in the basement, stays 62 degrees all winter. I let them go dormant.

hibiscus,
When do you move them into the basement ? Do you start them in the basement with the lights on ...? When do you shut the lights off..... I have some Brugs that RootDoctor gave me and they are currently potted in the basement. I've left the lights on because they have suffered stress from being dug out and I thought that would give them a boost but now I don't know when to let them go dormant....? Any advice ?

I put only older large ones in basement, after I have no place to keep them from getting frosted outside. Only one small east basement window, let them go dormant, water a small amount about every month, just enough to keep roots from drying out, but not so much as to make them rot. Smaller ones, I put under lights and keep them growing, either in basement or upstairs where there is light from windows and house heat.

Any under stress from being dug, I would not let go dormant for some time, or not at all. They might not make it through the winter going dormant.

Hope this helps.

hibiscus.
That's a big help I'll keep them in the basement under lights for the winter. They do look bad right now but in reading about them they sound tough. Thanks for the advice....
