Only with some species Ferocactus is actually a synonym of Sclerocactus, but not in general.
For example, the now so-called (I still call it Glandulicactus) Sclerocactus uncinatus v crassihamatus had been called Ferocactus crassihamatus by Britton&Rose in 1922.
