May sound like a silly question, but... I've not had a lot of success with EEs and I'm assuming it's mostly because I'm not sure how to plant and care for them. I know I underwatered the ones I had this summer, but I have lost 2 or 3 other named varieties and I'm just sick about it. So it made me wonder if maybe I'm not planting them deep enough to protect them over winter.
And do you mulch yours really well for winter? (particularly in zones 7 & 8).
Thanks so much!

BTW these are the ones I was trying to grow this summer:

How deep do you plant EE bulbs?
Cool! Found the answer to my question here:
http://www.caladiumbulbs.com/information.htm
Beneath 2" of soil
(the ones I had planted in the spring were probably only beneath an inch of soil, if that. i will not only replant the only ones i salvaged a bit deeper, but will also give them a pretty thick layer of mulch for winter.)

Hey Cajun2 as far as mulch goes last fall I tried layered newspaper under pine straw. It worked beautifully! I lost my 'Black Magic' 2 years ago but the new one came back fine this Spring. The only problem I had to break apart the newspaper in the Spring to help the EE's out. This year I am going to try shredded newspaper and composted cow manure under pine straw. Check out my trade list and see if you are interested in any of the ones I have! I don't have Black Magic on my list but I may be able to seperate it.. I also have the regular old green ones not on my trade list.
I have never planted bulbs, just got transplants of other people pups (offshoots, babies), so can't help you with depth. Instead, do you want some pups of these? I can bring them to the swap. :)
You guys are so sweet! Know what I'm doing? (grin)
Went by the Oriental Grocery Store and bought about a half dozen large 'taro roots' (ahem... EE?!!! lol) One lady, in very broken English, asked how I knew about taro root. I grinned and told her I was a gardener and that I was going to PLANT them. Another lady helped the first to understand that these were EEs and both proceeded to help me find ones with buds ;0)
Think I should use bulb booster or whatever on these before I plant them? Or just stick 'em in the ground?
Very good idea! I never thought about just checking out a oriental grocery store. I knew that they were taro and eaten, but it did not cross my mind to try that.
I am still bringing the pups that I planned on potting up for the swap so if you want some then they are yours.
Cool! What can I bring you?
Check my list... I THINK it's pretty up-to-date, although I'm finding seedlings here and there all around the garden...
Cajun2 -- genius!!! I am going to do that too!!! How fun it will be to see what you get!! Not to mention you will know that the kind you plant is edible.. Not so sure about mine - I like to know exactly if I can eat something first. Not that I would know how to cook the stuff anyway! LOL
Well my new obsession is Daylilies. Do you have any fans to share?
Sure do hon! See my trade page for a list of the varieties I have and LMK! I'll put your name on whatever you'd like.
