Fourleaf milkweed
Asclepias quadrifolia
Blooms in mid-May; attracts butterflies.
Fourleaf milkweed (Asclepias quadrifolia)
What a rare milkweed! I don't think I've ever found a pic for quad. in all my searches. Grow it yourself? You probably get this alot but are you trading?
There is a lot of this plant in a state park that is nearby...I have not seen any on my own property. I have considered collecting seeds, but honestly I would have to check with the park personnel and see if it is allowed. I need to get a better picture of the foliage and post it. Lower down on the stem there are 4 leaves in a whorled arrangement which gives the plant it's species name.
I am pleased to find someone else who is familiar with this plant. It always has butterflies around it when in bloom, like all the milkweeds. If I can gather some seeds I will share with you :).
I would really appeciate it. My dream is to one day have a milkweed garden where all the monarchs will come from around the world to visit. Lol. JK, but as many milkweed species as I can find would be great.
What are you looking for in trade?
I am not really looking for anything to trade at this time...I have way more than I can keep watered now. Of course, I am constantly starting more plants anyway; I sowed 6 kinds yesterday! Do you have a trade list?
Check out this milkweed I found in my woods this spring...unfortunately, it did not make any seeds. Animals had stripped the vines completely of foliage not long after flowering. Next year I am going to dig some up if they reappear. Another common name for it is Climbing Milkweed.

I did dig up one vine at the time and potted it. It still looks great! So I am going to plant it in the yard when it starts raining here (we are in our 8th week of a terrible drought, can you believe that?).
Anyway, I am always glad to share seeds if I have them for SASE. So I will try to remember to get some for you next year if I see some.
The climbing ones always look so different than the upright ones. I have honey vine myself, but I think one of the two big milkweed sellers have Matelea but maybe not the same species.
I don't actually have a seed trade list b/c I usually do plants.
Are you looking for honey vine? I'm trying to root a cutting and I also started some showy milkweed seeds, I hope at least some will make it, then I also have swamps, tropical and common.
I just reread your comments and noticed you were trying to attract monarchs. They usually go through here in the late summer and early fall and are most attracted to my tall New England Asters. This year (due to the drought-dried blooms?) we did not have hardly any butterflies. If you don't have any of this aster and want a piece next spring, let me know.

Do you think it'll need staking if grown against some briars? We have a column of wild roses that are pretty sturdy, do you you think they could be trained to lean against it? I'm too lazy to stake.
Are you SURE you're not looking for anything b/c if you are, please let me know! This offer stands even after a trade if I ever post a pic of something that you'd like. I'll have a lot more perennials next year too.
Michelle I really got sidetracked away from this thread and never did answer your question.
The tall asters can be tied to a support such as fencing or arbors. They usually lose the lower leaves (because I don't water them, I guess) so they would look better at blooming time if they had something in front of them like a dwarf goldenrod or purple coneflowers to hide the lower stems. I usually just tie a piece of twine around the whole bunch and tie it off to the fence. If you cut them back in July to about 18 inches, they will be more bushy and not as tall (4 feet instead of 6 or 7), but harder to stake if staking becomes necessary due to a heavy crop of blooms. Let me know if you want one early next spring.
I got your click and ship notification and I am checking the mailbox daily. I will let you know when I get the plant!
I hope it does okay for you. I had to remove the top part b/c something keeps getting to my plants and rolling up in the leaves and damaging that part of the plant. But I sprayed it and fed it and it spruced up!
