Talked me into it.

Thanks for the nudge Lilypon. I was kinda lurking :-}

I have Chilean glory vine seeds I can trade. Haven't tested but they look viable. First question - How should I store them and prepare them for seeding?

I started them the end of January last year along with Cup and Saucer vine which even bloomed in September, which I hear is a bonus. They both did great as you can see in the picture. This year I might try starting them the first of January and use either bubble wrap or clear plastic of about 24" high to contain them to individual pots.

I would love to trade for other vines or anything unique. Most of our yard is uncharted territory. I also built a pond. Are there any water plants that can be started from seed?

So nice to see you here finally. I sent you an email months ago trying to get you in here. There are so few of us from the prairies. If you've been lurking, you know we talk about a lot more than trading. Please, show us some more pictures. I would love to see some 'around town' pics too, if you can.

First year Clematis. I understand I should leave the vine and cut it back to ground level in the spring?

Welcome Wide_Swath,

Gorgeous photos. Love the color of your clematis, so rich, and your little pooch is adorable.

So nice to see you here Wide_Swath! As you can tell we are really happy to have another prairie gardener in our midst. You have some of my favorite plants (and colors) in your garden......I haven't tried the Chilean Glory vine yet (have certainly eyed it tho').

I found a few links that might be of some help to you:

We have a very knowledgeable member from Chile who, I'm sure, would be happy to supply you with additional information. Here is a link where Ursula asks people to contact her:

To send a DG member an email just click on their name and the email link option is listed there.

If you are interested in water gardening be sure to set some hours aside (come our lovely winter) and explore the Victoria Aventure site: http://www.victoria-adventure.org/

I'm thinking your clematis is Jackmanii? If it is I would wait until spring to prune the dead growth off.
http://ds.dial.pipex.com/clematis/prune.htm Jackmanii is in group 3......here I find the growth is usually winter killed back to the 12 inch pruning that they suggest.

Whoopeee - a second Albertan. Practically close enough to Edmonton to call a neighbour. Jealous of the chilean glory vine - tried to start from seed with dismal results. How did you start yours and where did you get your seed?
beautiful cobaea - a friend of mine has one that is more burgundy in tone. Can they be overwintered or are they true annuals? (getting better, echoes?? eh)

Pam I took a look at the victoria garden link. I can't get over the devastation their lovely property has suffered this fall. I think I just had my zone envy load emptied.

It does make our winter look not too bad.......tho our cars may balk at starting (and develop square tires) at least our houses remain standing (......please don't send a tornado our way)! ;)

Welcome to DG WideSwath.

Re your clematis, my method is, at the end of Oct (I think a little sooner in your zone), to dig down about 6" around the clematis, remove or cut the foliage from the trellis, roll it up and put in the hole, and cover with dirt and then wood chip mulch. This gives the clematis a good cool mulch every year. Mine is very happy with this treatment and grows better each year.

WideSwath, where'd you go to? Still want to trade off some of those Chilean Glory Vine seeds? Maybe I have something you would like?
