I need some advice

County Roscommon, Ireland(Zone 8a)

I was given some seed from Shirley (Brugie) which came from Kell called VP x inca sun. It has grown to quite a big plant now but I didn't think it would do much this year. Having just checked it today, it has Y'd and has a couple of very small buds on it. The problem is, it is planted in the ground and our weather is turning very autumnal and I don't think it is going to bloom in time. My question is, if I cut it at the base and stick it in a pot, will the buds fall of while it is recouperating? It would be a shame not to try and see flowers this year, even though there is not much of it left! Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Prudence. Brugie will have to check in here for those seeds were not from me. Maybe Kyle?

If the buds were big I would say cut it and stick in water and take a chance they will open and not fall off. But if they are small, it is less likely they will hold on long enough.

Can you dig it out roots and all and stick in a warmer place with lots of light? They may hold on for you. I f you dig it out, I would cut off all of the big leaves and lots of the smaller ones to help take the stress off the plant from the move. Though let me warn you, I have never dug one up yet myself!!

I think they were mine from last year, Sue. Anyway, I'd do like Kell says. I had some I would have loved to have kept in one piece, but they were just too big. If you do end up cutting it off, keep about 10 inches on the rootball end and you can dig that up just in case the top doesn't root.

I have dug up a few seedlings in the past couple of weeks. And those that had small buds are still hanging on. The ones which I had already seen bloom, I cut most of the foliage off; the ones that I haven't seen yet, are completely intact. Of course they are touching the ceiling of my GH, so I hope they don't get too much taller this winter...

Thank you Shirley, Kell and Gretchen. The buds are very small and I'm not sure I fancy digging it up as the weather is, and has been, awful. I think I'll go the cutting route and hope for the best.

Shirley, apologies for not thinking vp x inca sun was yours!! Do you know what colour the flowers will be?

Sue, I have no idea. With VP as a parent, there is a good chance that it will be white, but you just don't know without growing them out to bloom. Wish I could guarantee a color for you.

Nevermind Shirley, I like surprises!
