Imagine my suprise..........

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

We were removing the tropicals in our downtown beds and after we got the castor beans tore out guess what we found??? No and not that either!! LOL A dwarf banana tree(not cavendish) had a large flower open with several hands of nanas on it!We potted it up and put in the greenhouses..will see which kind it is when they ripen . :-)

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

What a great surprise, Kyle! Is there a picture available?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Imagine in your short season and I can't get them in my long one. Maybe it needs the high temps.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

We need pictures Kyle!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

First guess here would be a dwarf orinoco!!!
Second guess would be a raja puri, both varieties have been know to flower at the 4 to 6 ft trunk height.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Tropicman I have both kinds in my collection at work so will have to wait on the ripe fruit to tell! Pics on Weds. if I remember to take the camera to work! :-)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Heres the pics! It seems to be an orinoco type. Its about 8 feet tall to the flowers and a few feet taller then that for the foliage.

It loves the greenhouse temps..two more hands(flower rows) have opened.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yep looks like it to me too!
Can you keep track of amount of time to first ripe banana?

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Thats neat!!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Tropicman.....from this date to first ripe.........I'll post a pic and bring this back up when we get the first ripe fruit!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Mine are going on 45 days now, still outside, but approaching cold spell, might get an earlier first freeze first of next week, looks like I will have to cut stalk, way to soon, not sure if they will ripen up or not, time will tell.
I'll be watching for your ripen update, thanks!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gosh, I heard it takes 180 days for the fruit to ripen. That seems like an awful long time. I don't know how patient I could be, but I guess it would do no good to pick the fruit early. Hope you have room inside for yours Don.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

No such luck,as fruit is 16 ft up in tree!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

T-man you're going to have to build a greenhouse over that banana tree! How about if you string Christmas lights in the top to turn on when it's going to frost? I think there was a guy in TX who use to do that with a brugmansia.
Kyle, that flower is very dark isn't it? Those little nanas are cute!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hi Cala, hopefully the frost will hold off a while longer,I believe you can cook green bananas anyhow??

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

It sure likes the heat in the greenhouse.Opens a new hand every couple of days! :-)
