Good comparison shot.
The ones in the back with golden spines and flower stems on top are Golden Barrels (Echinocactus grusonii). The five or so in the foreground are Biznaga Gigante.

Spring Valley, CA(Zone 10a)

Do they get them mixed up very often? In the trade I mean. Are the giant barrels rare? The reason I ask is because they look so similar. I pick little ones up all the time (golden barrels), so I have maybe 50-60 of them in the yard.

There are distinct differences in the spine array & color on each areole.
One being, the Golden Barrel will have yellow-gold spines coming out from the outer edges of the areole and laying flatter. The Biznaga Gigante don't have these.
