Is it possible to plant seeds now, indoors, and grow herbs in my window all winter? If so, what kinds are recommended?
Winter indoor herb garden?
I do it every year. I do basil, parsley, rosemary, and of course catnip! I've tried cilantro, but I just can't quite get it to grow well indoors. I really like mini purple basil (see PDB) because it's a gorgeous, compact plant, but it has the same full flavor as it's Italian cousin the Sweet Genovese. I generally grow the dwarf curly parsley, as well. I keep them growing in pots on the window sills year 'round. In fact, my curly parsley has been growing for about 18 months, now, with no sign of letting up. I think any of your herbs will grow providing you can give them enough sun and warmth. (And we're not talking "heat" - I keep my heat off while I'm at work most days, so the house sometimes gets down to the 50's.)
Good luck - and have fun! I love being able to pick the herbs fresh for dinner!
I don't normally start herbs from seed for indoor, winter use, but I do dig up my healthiest flat leved parsley, genovese basil, whatever sage and thyme is growing, and bring them in for the winter. I have a pot of rosemary that I brought in last year. It did so well in the pot, I never bothered to put it back in the ground this summer. I am now starting to ease them all into their winter home in my living room. They spend days outside and nights in my mudroom. Soon they'll be in the mudroom for the entire day for a week or so, then on to the living room. nice sunny southwest exposure all winter long. Plus, I can snip off springs for the water jug on top of the wood stove. Yum!
Sequee and Leisurlee: Thank you for that great bunch of info. I am going to get started today.
