Thought I would share a few pictures.
Episcia 'Chocolate Soldier'
Susan...pretty much the same way you grow African Violets. I use a light weight soil, have grown them in the north and south windows, sit them on the window ledge, sit them on a plant stand, or sit them on a try with pebbles and water underneath for some humidity. I have found them easy to grow. Maybe some others have advice.
That's a lovely Episcia !
I just got my Chocolate Soldier plant in and it is lovely!
I really love all the different varieties there are. They seem so easy to grow .
Thanks for sharing the pic.
MsC
I have that very same one I received from Elena at the TN RU. She had it growing in a glass of water in her kitchen window. I put it in a pot and found it really likes me so she gave me another at the KY RU last week.
I put the first one out on my patio while I was gone to KY and when I came back it was blooming again. I think it likes it out there.
Wonderful little plant. Think I'd like to do some African Violets too.
:^)))

Molly,
We'd love to have you growing some AV's, too. There are sooo many AV's and for the most part they are so easy to grow that anybody can grow them.
They seem to be a little addictive though..lol
I started with one that I babysat for my MNL and now I have a house full!
The Episcias are so pretty with all the different colors and they grow fairly easy in the house I have started collecting them too...:)
Welcome to the forum!
MsC
Thanks so much MsC. And now I am getting another good start, one of our friends in this forum is sending me some starts. Ooohhhhh a new addication, isn't it fun?
Molly

Why don't you add it to the plantfiles dep?
When I first got into episcias a couple of years ago, it was next to impossible to find pictures on the web of common cultivers.
You all are making me miss the beautiful 'Episcia 'Chocolate Soldier' that I had to leave with a neighbor when I moved from Florida... There was just no room to bring many of my beloved plants with me. I had a variety of African Violets that had to be given away to new homes... but I think I miss my Episcia the most... It was just huge and I kept it in a large hanging pot right on my patio. It was a beauty...
Thanks for the memories... Now I shall see if I can find a source for another one...
Blessings,
Carolyn
Want one? I think I have a few rooted that needed to be potted up.
CaptMicha you have mail...yessiree you surely do....
Blessings,
Carolyn
Chocolate Soldier is a beauty. I will have to start looking for one. Thanks for the pictures debcooper53.
Nice picture I came across Deb !! Do you still have it ? Do you have anymore Episcia ?
One of my fav plants.....I'm glad you bumped this up Violet_Treasure I'm thinking mine needs water ASAP. :S
Wow!! I can't believe all the blooms/buds--a very happy plant.
saw at HD today that they have the hanging baskets of the "lipstick plant"...from Hermanns greenhouse in Apopka....what's the name of the above..."asencia " something or other...let me google it..lol
Aeschynanthus radicans - Lipstick Plant - Gesneriaceae
As with all epiphytes, the lipstick plant does not live as a parasite on the
tree, but takes its nourishment from fallen leaves and twigs that accumulate in ...

they were 7.95 for a hanging basket full..you know they cal them "angel" plants..
My 'Episcia 'Chocolate Soldier' seems to be happy in natural light where ever I put it ! I need to cut the stolens off later today and put them down to share ! It's such a gorgeous happy plant to grow !
Allison...yep I still have it, and I have a couple more...one that is called "strawberry episcia", and one that is called "purple espicia". Don't know if that is their true names....but that is what they were called when I got them.
Deb
I have one called strawberry patch..perhaps that is your strawberry one :)
Just a thought!
There is so many names ! I took half a dozen stolens off Chocolate Soldier today ! and Couple from Teddy Bear, and Aussie Alcie. I have a few plants of Grey Lady !
LOL..Can I be on the list for them Allison?! Pwease :)
I will have more episcia soon..I ordered some from Rob...I also have strawberry Patch which I beheaded and transplanted!
I sent you pink panther..I also have burning embers which is still a baby and one other..which the name escapes me at the moment.
I do have a question..I was told they don't like a lot of light...are yours under grow lights? I am thinking of moving mine to an unlighted rack

Oh they like light. The albosias really like light give them 16 hours a day they'll bloom for you all the time! Episcia do light light but grow well in natural or artificial. My plants rooting , or babies I like under light, my larger plants grow in nautral light. They like it warm and humid their flame violets and grow in the hot forest. My blue ones Blue Heaven likes to be right under the lights almost touching, grows slower but compact and always blooming.
You can have all you want Lorry. They are fun to grow in Hanging baskets ! In the warm weather outside or on your deck or porch. Just if you bring them back in in the winter spray them good.
I grow a lot in pan pot. The picture above is in a 5" pan wicked pot.
I have a ton of pan pots from bluebird to fill up LOL
Once I get my episcia..I will put some of it down to trade also.
If I have luck with the bewitched..you will be first on the list for it also :)
bewitched won't be hard to grow it may be small when you get it Rob sends out small plants...
I have Streps, Trailers, Epsicas in pans pots their so happy in them.
I can't wait for my FC so I know who is a trailer and who isn't.
:)
I have my eps in pans...My streps in solos..since they are small but now that I have the pans...they are moving up town also :)
I am sure Bewitched will be small but once he is large enough..I am dying to propagate and share him!
Pan pots are nice and shallow as the plants roots are shallow too. Strep's roots grow right up top close to the soil surface. All I know the ones in them bloom all the time and ones in 3 " pots don't. I will transplant when I have time.
