Poppy seed question???

Bryson, QC(Zone 4a)

Ok, no one laugh- but, seeds I have never really got into. Plants, ect no-problem. So, now, i ahve these poppy seeds-how do you sow these little buggers into the garden?

I find that mine self sow readily if I don't catch them right away and then I have poppies all over the place the next spring. So, what I do is just scatter the seeds on top of the ground where I want them to grow next spring.

I'm not saying this is the right way, but that's the way I do it and it's worked for me.

That's the way I sow mine also. As a matter of fact, I sowed some this afternoon for the spring. :~)

sticking my 2 cents worth in, just so you know that poppies are one of the plants that really don't like to be transplanted which is why so many people do it the way that joan and eskie described.

Good Question Ingrid I have been in the same dilemma and this is my first fall to try my hands at growing poppy's and I also have started several different varieties of poppy's in the last month a bunch have sprouted already but I also just sprinkle them with a little sand mixed in a little easier for me since they are so small and lightly press them in with my foot, but this is my first time so I hope I am doing it right..I can't wait till spring and see them grow...
If these that have sprouted already will they just die and the ones that are still in seed be the ones that come up ?? Just wondering!!! And another question if I may, do you seed all poppies the same way or are there any varieties planted different?

Thank- You all for helping me with this....I will scatter them and see in the spring how we faired out...

One other question-Hollyhocks , same principal???

As I understand it, hollyhocks are sown much the same as poppies - scatter them around in fall where you want them. Hollyhocks are biennuals, though, so you will only get leaves the first year, and flowers the second. You may want to get another opinion, this is my first year gardening so my info is only from books rather than from experience :>)

Ingrid,

I got California Poppy Seeds from someone early last spring and sowed them indoors. Then I transplanted them outdoors. What type of poppy seeds are you wanting to sow? I'd use the PDB that show's zones, since you are in Canada, to see if they would over winter for you or not, first.

does anyone know anything about the somniferum (giganteum) and purple gleam poppy(eschscholzia) I received these seeds and wondering if they will be ok to sow now or should they be sewn in the spring..
I have also started a few from seed in the house but have heard they do not transfer well..is this correct..

Vicki - I've transplanted oriental poppies - they are definitely a pill! Most times I've succeeded but not always. I usually put a gallon metal can or 5 qt. icecream bucket around them for awhile because we have so much wind, but they are difficult because of the long tap root. Don't give them up for dead too quickly tho - I've also thought I'd lost some and then in the fall they will start to show some growth. I did three clumps last year. One grew great, the other so-so, the other was dead. One bloomed this spring and the 2nd was a small plant. They went dormant and about 2-3 weeks ago started growing again and to my surprise, the third clump which I had given up for dead last year, has small, about 3" high leaves on it. So, it sat dormant since early fall, last year. Isn't that amazing? I'd have never guessed it would still grow after sitting for that long! I've not tried the other kinds you mention.

Thanks so much, my son ended up buying 6 very large dried pods which when he got them sounded like a musical interment but there was so many seeds inside and I am so hoping we can get the same large pods from these if they grow...I have a small clump that is about 1 inch now and since it is suppose to frost soon was wondering if I can put them in another pot and bring inside I hate to see them die just as they are coming up..the other seeds I have put out I am hoping to see them in the spring..
