Franklin (the cat) lost his canine teeth somehow!

He's around 8 years old....he had these long canine teeth that stuck out of his mouth even when it was closed, and made him look like a cute little vampire LOL....Friday night he had them but then Sunday night he didn't - just a couple of holes where they were. He had a little bit of abrason on his upper lip on each side near where the teeth were, but other than that, no signs of distress, & eating normally. We took him to the vet just to get things checked out; she asked us how it happened, we didn't know, then she asked Franklin what happened - but he wasn't talking! Maybe he was stuck somewhere & had to chew his way out? :-(

Fortunately all seems to be well, but is this normal? Has this happened to anyone else's kitty?
