Herbal Supplements for Diabetic Cats?

My Lucas has diabetes...I don't have the time or money to put him through the insulin testing/managment program through our local vet. What are some ways I can try and manage his diabetes using food and/or natural supplements? He has gone from approximately 25 pounds down to about 13# in the last year. Please excuse me if there might be other threads on this, but I'm on lunch at work and don't have much time to search for prior discussions.
