One of My Buds Fell Off Today and......

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

of course, my curiosity got the best of me, so I opened it up. Inside there was a whole 'nother bud, with tendrils. Was THAT the flower? Or are these double flowered ones I am getting? Of course I don't know, but it sure was interesting looking.

Karrie -- the part you tore open is the calyx. It holds and protects the corolla (petals), and then protects the seed pod if one is formed. The part that you saw with the tendrils was the corolla. It is probably a single flower. We can't wait to see pictures of your blooms!

Thanks for posting the photo Gretchen...I think I have been calling the calyx the corolla! Pictures speak volumes, don't they!?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Thanks for that confirmation Gretchen!

I am getting so antsy about these blooming! I checked Weather.com today, and there aren't any freezing temps in sight yet, and it goes forward a whole week. I would like to know, since they are on the porch now, near the house, if it would be ok to plastic them or put a sheet over them, if we are expecting a frost, or should I be safe and bring them indoors, so not to lose the whole plant.

Karrie -- you can use a fabric sheet on plants but plastic can do more harm than good. Personally, if it was a plant that I definitely did not want to lose, I wouldn't hesitate to bring it in my house...

What I am worried about is the buds falling off in the house because of climatic change. I am glad that the weather has improved, and frost is a ways out yet. Some of these buds are real fat and almost translucent. Does that mean they are close?

Well, I think I'd rather lose the buds than losing the buds AND the plant...

Tonight, take a flashlight and shine it behind the bud. You will be able to see how far down the corolla has decended. It will still take a couple of days to bloom AFTER the corolla pops through the calyx. But that'll at least give you an idea...

ok. The one I opened up yesterday looked like it was about 2/3rds of the length of the outside part. It is so nice having knowledgeable people like you around! :-)

Karrie,
This bud was a week away from opening when I snapped this.

Scooter, you can really see the inside of it, as it's down toward the bottom!

It is always heart breaking when that happens. 2 days ago I picked up 2 buds from the ground and opened them. They were TRPLES!!! No hint of color yet though, they were green. I am going nuts til the smaller buds grow out now!

Mine fell off when I was moving the plants on the porch towards more sun. I decided since we aren't in danger of frost this week to just leave them where they are for now. Just a little movement, vibration or jolting seems to do it. It was the biggest buds that fell.

Cute huh Karrie ?

My Brug Sonogram ... lol

Notice the moisture dropletts , they are on the interior wall of the calyx.

Scooter - I just got back from checking on mine for the morning. They did well overnight and have dew droplets that appear inside as well.

Cheyenne, WY(Zone 5a)

I have moved mine regularly when I expect temperatures to get near freezing or below about 38 or so, and have had no problems with buds falling off from movement or the climate change as long as they spend only the evening or a day in the house. They seem to be doing fine and continue to produce buds/flowers (even though they haven't until now). They are cuttings that I had shipped and arrived here around June 20. They have had a good 3 months to grow significantly and will be beautiful next year, I'm sure.

Welcome WyGardener. Hope you are enjoying the forums. Hope you will show us your brugs when you have a chance. My husband lived and worked in Cheyenne when he was younger.

Another fell off today. Oh well. Funny - they are only falling from one particular plant.

Yesterday I soaped them down, and the leaves seem happier. Hope I got them in time. It is getting nearer and near that time to bring them in (1 1/2 weeks maybe). In the meantime, the buds that exist on the plant that isn't dropping them are getting much bigger. I need to get the flashlight out there, like Gretchen suggested now that it is dark and see what's going on in there. :-) I know they are close. I don't think it is two weeks in the fall - try a month plus as it has cooled down. I have kept them in the same spot, where they can sun, since the temps seem to be ok for them. I watch the temps every day.

Karrie i still have mine outside although it is getting down in the forties. my VPS are setting buds and blooming like their is no tommorow. the others do not have any more buds on so i will bring them inside. with the cool weather we had and all the rain my brugs grew big but did not set many buds. Wow.. lol a Wyoming Gardener! Welcome!!!

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Karrie, any blooms yet?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

nope! But the buds are getting fatter and fatter by the day! Evening temps aren't getting any lower than 39 degrees, and no freeze in sight (yet) so they are remaining outside on the porch. I do check the weather EVERY night, just to be safe! :-)

One of my white blooms opend this AM, but I was in to big a hurry to run out and see if it smelled nice or not.......
Can't wait to see what you get from yours....they are seedlings right???

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)
