Cut back your hibiscus, after they finish flowering in the summer, completely to the ground, and then get another flush of blooms come fall like these?

mine haven't quit blooming........

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Mine are just now finishing up. One zone cooler, so I probably didn't get blooms as early as you did.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hmm,mine are done blooming ,just about the end of July,I wouldn't think one zone would be that much different, but CC yours is still blooming thats wonderful
Being were just about in October now.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I always thought all of them just bloomed till frost, had no idea they quit
But I'm thinking if I cut some of them down in July they might be a shorter plant, that might be nice
I might try that next year

Osage City, KS(Zone 5b)

TropicMan, I still have about 5 blooms here in Kansas on mine........ I only cut them back in the spring with the pampass grass........ Didn't know you should do it more than once a season..... maybe I'll try that next summer..... AHHH next summer can't wait till it gets here.......

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

CC,mine bloom like heck for about 3 weeks then completely stop blooming, then nothing after that, well might put one or two more flowers but not several at atime like before.
Vs,are you still fertilizing?
I stop around end of August here,so even when I cut them back, before they go to seed they rebloom without any fertilizer at all.
They may only grow about halfs as tall, but bloom profusely.

Should this Hibiscus be left in the ground? My goodness, I thought it was a tropical?? Elaine

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

No,they are hardy!
and sooo easy to grow

Osage City, KS(Zone 5b)

Roselaine, You are correct, not all hibiscus are hardy. There are some really nice tropical varieties but they don't make it through a Kansas winter.......

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Wouldn't it be nice if they all were???
I wish they'd get some more tropical colors, like doubles with lacy edges ,and make them hardy!!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Mine always get a flush then quit. I said something one time to someone about pulling off the seed pods or cutting them back and I was told it did not matter they only bloomed once. Now you say they keep blooming or bloom again?? Sigh...

Danville, VA(Zone 7b)

My red miami tropical has 9 blooms on it this morning. ( va / nc border ).

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I have the Hardy dark red, should I cut them down to the ground for the winter

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes Chele, after they bloom, and before the seedpod make, cut them back to the ground,or even just halfway back is ok too, they will flush and bloom again.
Kareoke, yep you can cut back for winter,it will die back as well.
9 blooms is really great RB,very seldom to I have that many at one time.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I am from Winfield Ks. Are these perennials?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes these are perrinal hardy hibiscus.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I let mine go to seed and didnt do any cutting at all and they put up another flush better than the first one. The stems didnt grow as tall as the origonal ones but WOW. I have a couple of seed pods from the second flush too but with the frost coming I dont know if theyll make it.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Did you continue to fertilize?
Most plants once they go to,seed, stop there flowering,
Thats great your getting a second flush better than your first!!!

Yonkers, NY(Zone 5b)

I have a tropical Hibiscus I bought at a plant sale at my job last year. I brought it indoors last winter & put it in the only window that gets decent light.
It dropped some leaves, had an aphid attack -but it survived.
When I put it out this summer, it grew some more leaves but didn't bloom until a week ago. The blooms were all on the new growth.
Does it only bloom on new growth?
Should I have cut it back when I brought it in for the winter?
I have started bringing in plants.
Should I cut it back before bringing it in?

Hi Nancy,
I'll tell you what I do with my hibiscus,I cut them back a third to half way,and cut the branches out of the center where no criscross occurs, this allows for better air circulation to help cut back on insects and any bacteria or fungal diseases.
Spray plant with a hard stream of water to get rid of any bugs under the leaves, then spray again with insecticidal soap.

Thanks, Tropicman!

There's a HUGE spider that has his web strung between the hibiscus & tuberose.
I'd better hang an "eviction notice" out for him.
I don't mind spiders but I sure don't want that one in my house! He might eat my cat.... or ME!!
LOL!

BTW... I forgot to note - that picture was from last year.
