Watch those seeds when you pick them and lay them up to dry, the outer covering will "pop" open and the seed will go flying across the room!

Cala,do you wait for the pod to drop from the plant,or pick it when it turns brown?

I tried waiting till it turned brown, but they popped open so fast I kept losing the seeds, so now I pick them when the pod gets little slits in it. It will still be mostly green, but will pop off the plant easily and you can see the little slits in the sides of the pod. Then I pick the seeds out of the pod and put them in a brown bag overnight because there is a covering over the seeds that will propel the seed across the room when it dries out!

Thanks Cala for all the info,I hope I can catch it in time.

T-man, here is picture of the seed with the little slits like I was talking about. This is a different Jatropa than you have pictured, but the pods are the same.

My J. multifida drops the pods while they're still green (though, quite large compared to my other jatrophas). I've got a couple seedlings so far from them. I think J. multifida is my favorite of the jatrophas - I love the leaves!
